Hello!

I recently acquired a 2008 XC70 3.2 AWD.

I am confused about the correct tire sizes for this car.

The owner's manual says the correct sizes are:
225/55R16
225/50R17
245/45R17
http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2008/2008_XC70/08xc70_06b.htm#pg250

But TireRack.com (and other websites) list the following sizes:
215/65R16
235/55R17
235/50R18
235/45R19
245/30R20
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/SelectTireSize.jsp?autoMake=Volvo&autoModel=XC70+AWD&autoYear=2008&autoModClar=

Looking at the 16" sizes, sizemytires.com says that the 215/65R16 are 4.89% smaller diameter than the 225/55R16 called for in the user's manual.

I am confused about what the correct size is.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

rubber bands! 245/30R20 -- That would be harsh!

Also, don't you have the sticker/decal on the driver door b-pillar that lists the tire sizes with the PSI recommendations?

Are you saying you trust tirerack's info over the owner's manual? If so I think I see your point in that tirerack has likely actually sold some tires for these cars (and many others of course) but surely the owner's manual should be seen as the canonical source?

comparing the volvo-recommended 225/55R16 to the 235/55R17 on my car at the moment, there is a big difference in size. The calculator at tiresize.com says at 90mph on my speedo I'm only actually doing 85mph!

I do have that sticker and I have checked it for tire pressure (it's the same as what's recommended in the owner's manual) and I can't remember if it also lists tire size (I'll check next time I get to the car). If it does list the size, the tire pressures listed are really only for the recommended sizes right?

Tire Rack will not be happy selling you tires if they aren't factory size or one of the optional sizes (+ or - sizing). They will let you know what fits on your current car, what came OEM, and what they would recommend if you want to go with a different size.

I agree with JRL that your owners manual seems to list some odd sizes. 245/45/17 is most certainly not an XC70 tire size. That seems more like a previous generation R tire size.

I checked the sticker on the B-pillar and found it lists the tire size as 235/55R17.

I am going to attempt to contact tirerack.com to see if they can shed some light on the difference between the owner's manual and the B-pillar sticker.

I contacted Volvo Canada Customer Service about this and received the following reply:

We always recommend following the information the B pillar sticker as these are the sizes that the car is certified with. Recommended tire size on the B pillar can vary from what is indicated in the owners manual based on specific vehicle options. Other tire suppliers may recommend equivalent sizes in order to make more options available to customers as not every tire is made in every size.

So I will go with the 27" diameter sizes like 235/55R17.

I suspect that year's owner's manual listed the V70 tire sizes by mistake.

The tirerack sizes are correct, though you could probably just look at a newer model year XC70 owner's manual to get the right sizes also.

EDIT: tire rack is wrong about the 20", that should be 235/40R20

I wondered about that size - it's the wrong diameter tire.

235/55R17 is a 27" diameter tire.

245/30R20 is only 25.8" diameter....

Thanks!

The US/Canada 2009 V70 & XC70 manual lists the same tire sizes as the first manual I looked at 225/55R16 etc

page 249
http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2009/2009_V70/V70_XC70_OM_US_MY09-web.pdf

But this OTHER model year 2009 manual (global?) lists sizes for V70 separately from XC70

page 260 V70
page 262 XC70
http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2009/2009_V70/V70_XC70_OM_US_MY09-web.pdf

So it looks like you were correct Warpedcow, the 25.5" diameter tires (225/55R16, etc) are for the V70 and the 27" diameter tires (215/65R16, etc) are for the XC70.
