For the past weeks I have been experiencing intermittent surging at highway speeds after extended periods of driving (i.e. more than 20 minutes) and then the other night, I went to downshift from sixth to fifth gear to pass a vehicle and the car loss power. <p>As a result of the loss of power, the car began to buck and throw. After repeated to attempts to gain power by hitting the accelerator, the car continued to bog and lose power. However, the engine did not quit and after two minutes of slowly idling down the highway, I put the car in third gear and it regained power. The check engine light did not illuminate, so no code was registered.<p>Subsequently, the car then began to experience a suction type noise when I would hit the accelerator and then let off.<p>I took it to the dealership and as usual the techs could not reproduce the symptoms, preventing them from successfully diagnosising the issue. I suspect it is a fuel pump given the checkered past of the R fuel pump, but the tech said the fuel pump pressure is good. Also, they have changed the turbo boost valve.<p>Need help...I would greatly appreciate any feedback.<p>Best,<br>R-licious

It would help to know your model <B>YEAR R</B> (and the mileage)

After changing the valve the problem is still there?

The dealership sustpected the ECU and replaced it on the first visit; the second visit they replaced the turbo boost valve; now after this most power loss incident, they are at a lost given the fuel pump pressure is good. Thoughts?

I was having a power loss problem that was traced to a bad fuel pressure sensor. That problem produced a code, however. Still, it could explain why you are having both power jumps and losses if the feedback from the pressure sensor is used to actively adjust fuel flow.

Sure sounds like <B>fuel related</B> to me<br>However, if they actually replaced your ECU you should go to another dealer.<br>I've never heard of doing that for a problem like this.<br>Why replace it, <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/zeroforum_graphics/screwy.gif" BORDER="0"> just reload it, they either work or not

Sounds like it could be a simple boost leak. Check your hoses that the clamps are tight. When the hoses heat up from long drives they can get soft and let some air slide by if a clamp is loose and cause bucking under boost and an air noise from the escaping boost. I've had that experience with my TT before after I had some work done and the people working on my car forgot to properly tighten a clamp.

They replaced the fuel pressure sensor and that resolved our problem.
