Re: Help, Specs required (Needsdecaf)

Sorry,
Was in a rush, just came in from work. I'm not running stock, 3.5 inch down pipe, 3" inch piping, race cat, borla muffler, vibrant ultra quiet resonator and magnaflow tip.
Locally (Quebec, CANADA) article 258 of the highway safety code states "Every motor vehicle must be equipped with an exhaust system that conforms to the standards established by regulation"
Regulation 94 (Enforced by local LAW)
" No element of the exhaust system may be replaced, modified or removed in such a way that it will render the system louder than the one orignially installed at fabrication of the vehicle"
It's been on the vehicle over a year, locals have no problem but seems this provincial officer had an issue. The best part of this is how he deemed it illegal. Apparently my "tip" gave me away, and when he got in behind me he "heard" me (Bionic Ear?). Funny were both on the highway (yes driving, est 60mph), on an unpaved/grated road with medium traffic rolling along side of us and he still managed to pick me out.
Be prepared to ask for that and to duplicate the Regulation 94 procedure, whatever that is. Distance from the source and weighting are critical as well as on or off axis.
Also be aware of measured level versus perceived loudness. This goes back to the work first done by Fletcher/Munson and now ISO 226:2003. Simplified, it is the human characteristic to percieve some frequencies louder than others, even though they are at the same amplitude. A raspy exhaust note is loud to many but measurement may indicate the level is the same or even lower.
I am not sure how the police measured this violation. If you are speeding, they have radar, or calibrated speedometers that are considered to be valid measuring instruments. What device was used for the meaurement? If it was the human ear, it is a wonder of God's creation, with incredible dynamic range, but an accurate level measuring device, it is not.
Is this a "fix it" type ticket? Can you just splice in an additional temporary muffler?

Modified by rogersampson at 8:35 AM 5-25-2009

Re: Help, Specs required (rogersampson)

Ticket is NOT a must fix it, just a fine. Basically I can get x number of these until I replace it or get aquitted. Obviously should I get another I will have to possibly consider this option.
On the other hand I was informed by some that I probably landed on a hard arse who does this all day and has a 50% win ratio. My word against his and I must have all the backings I can to prove it.
