After some hard runs this evening I noticed a tapping sound under the hood. I did three runs, basically 1-3 gears. On run 2 I hit the rev-limiter in second gear. I have never done that before. After the third run, I drove about 5 miles to the ATM and the car
seemed fine.

I actually did not notice the sound until after I went to the ATM and then restarted the car. Hearing the sound, I suspected the oil level might have dropped, so when I got home a couple of minutes after leaving the ATM, I topped off the oil level, but it did not affect the noise. I have previously had a mild tapping on startup that was eliminated by topping up the oil (oil pan O-rings), but as I said, not this time. The oil level was at most .5 Qt under full. I shot this video after adding the oil. If this is a bent rod, does that mean a new engine? What are my options?

Re: Help me diagnose this sound (pelicanflyt)

BG Products "109"

Email me and I will outline exactly how the national fleet manager for BG Products and I cured the exact same noise (issue) on my car.

Re: Help me diagnose this sound (pelicanflyt)

Ohh, nasty.
That is a totally stuck ( possibly broken, most likely stuck), lifter.
I would change the oil, add an additive like LUCAS engine treatment and see if it unsticks itself.
If it doesn't, (unstick) it sounds like you will need a valve job.
Take this to a Volvo engine expert to get their opinion.
With your relatively low miles, it sounds as if possibly your oil pan has some 0 ring issues and oil-starved that lifter.
Seafoam can't hurt at all and also may unstick that lifter

Re: Help me diagnose this sound (JRL)

UPDATE: When I started the car this morning the ticking was still there, but not as pronounced. I drove 5 miles to my mechanic's shop. By the time I got there, the sound had stopped. The plan is to do a seafoam treatment and have the oil pan O-rings replaced in the near future. Thanks all.
