Hello, I have an inexpensive wireless backup camera (vr3 3.5" lcd) that I want to install on our 2004 Volvo XC70. However, I need to wire the power to the unit from the reverse lights so that it will power on when the car goes into reverse and I've never done anything like this before. Can anyone who has done something like this give me some pointers?

Do I need to remove the paneling on the inside of the lift gate to get to the wires for the reverse lights? How do I do that?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Re: Help installing backup camera (Mud Dog)

John, try google searching for back up camera, there are members who have installed these.

My suggestion would be to power the camera off an unused connection on the REM (remote electronics module) and use a relay on the backup up lights to turn it on & off. You might even be able to power it directly from one of the backup lights, but it might interfere with the dead bulb detection circuit and throw a code. No doubt others around here know how to do it.

If you wanted to do it the official way, Volvo has an AEM (accessory electronics module) that is used for aftermarket accessories that need to know the car speed, if it's in reverse and or one other thing I can't remember. You could use that to switch your relay. Bad news is that it's not cheap and requires a $100 downlload to activate.

Re: Help installing backup camera (MrTippy)

I can't see the camera drawing too much current.
I'd try a temporary hook up to the back-up lamp directly
and see if it upsets the lamp out circuit. Simple is good! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
