Hello all , I just recently picked up a 1966 122s,w/ a B20 engine in it.The guy I bought it off of told me it wasn't the original engine. He gave me a B18 a Green factory manual ,which is cool ,but doesn't cover the B20 specs? So I'm not sure what my settings/limits should be?from what I gathered first you set the valves, then carbs ,then timeing?might have last two out of order?well got some # off of the head and block,if they'll help?head reads Mag Volvo 1-418 205 B 23.On the reverse side it has an 8 embossed on it I 'm guessing it indicating 8 valves?the block reads Volvo 4968 0 135 20 KBG 419880 B18.If these #'s mean anything to any of you I would surely ,appriciate the help.plus If I know what's what it'll help trying to track down replacement parts.I am in the Los Angeles area, and was wondering of any good sources for parts ect .I am currently dealing with Napa.I am new to posting, I 've got alot of questions ,was thinking of trying to keep the topics seperate ,so any help I get, maybe easier for others to find in the future,if they have simular issues.Let me know ,thanks for your time and thank you for welcoming me George.

P.s. I 'm going to remove / replace the fuel filter and relocate it to before fuel pump, with good crimp clamps.
Modified by 1966122s4door at 8:32 PM 7-19-2009

Your Amazon may not have a B20 engine - if possible post some close-up pictures.
Here is some good reading while you gather more info on your car...
http://www.classicvolvo.com/on...e.htm
http://www.classicvolvo.com/on...c.htm
http://www.classicvolvo.com/
http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-122/c-1-71/
BTW, I thought scuba people ran wagons.
George Dill

You cite the numbers on the side of the block:
4968 0 135 20 KBG 419880 B18
All the 4968 series are B18 engines and since it SAYS B18 on the block I am
convinced that the block is a B18 block.
If you have correctly read the numbers the motor type is 496801.
My data shows this as a B18A engine with the "A" (tractor) cam, single Zenith carb and 75 hp used in 544s, 121 and 221 wagon from Aug 61 to July 66.
Your engine could have been bored to 3.500 and fitted with a B20 head which would in effect render it a B20. You can tell because the B18s have 11/32" valve stems with umbrella seals on TOP of the valve spring retainers while the B20 head has 5/16" valve stems with seals on the valve guides , not visible from above. Does your engine have one carb or two?

HI George ,
thank you,I am currently setting up an photo bucket account with pictures to help you verify what i'm looking at.I have duel carbs they are su's.I have not taken the valve cover off yet to check, yet but I will and will photograph what's lurking in there. The left side of the head reads Mag Volvo 1-418 (over)205 to the right of that it has B23?I belive I found the water drains for the original oil cooler system, and there appears to be a block off plate where the water pipe use to be mounted?top right of left side of engine.Wow It started out as a 75 horse power eng?that's about as much hp as a 1200 Harley Davidson sportster eng. Did the tractor cam have more power at the low to mid range?for pulling?Just curious? If It Turns out to be a Converted B 18 a w/B20 head would you exspect they would have replaced the cam?and if not what would you guess at for hp. apart from high milage? Are there differenses in Rod leanght of the 18 and 20 engines or just piston dia. and valve dia? normaly when you do a hop up of a H.D. 883 to a 1200. it would bump up the comp , is it the same?was it common for backyard mechanics vrs dealers to perform these type of conversion?and if so what should if any thing ,Might I be concearned with?I ask because frequently dealers have access to info the general public does not , like common repairs or recalls, ect?this is all new to me so thank you for your time.Jason

Modified by 1966122s4door at 8:37 PM 7-19-2009

That's a B18 head as well as a B18 block. There's no visual was of telling if the head is a low-compression A/D or a high compression B without measuring. The A/D is 3.465" thick, the B is 3.385".
B20s have the same crank and stroke. The added displacement comes only from larger bore. You do NOT want to use B20 pistons with a B18 head.

at what point do you measure the head, where? At The lip around where the gasket seals the cover?btw thank you Phil.
so, if it is a B 18 I can fid the lash adjustments, cool .There is no diference in the a/d or b adj.is there?I guessing squish area and valve size are the diference?
