Hello Swedespeed!

Two days ago our XC90 3.2 AWD started making a clang noise that seems to have been triggered while making a right turn. We now hear this in forward or reverse and both going straight or turning. Frequency is tied to wheel speed, but clang to rotation ratio is not consistently 1:1. Has anyone heard this? I've been reading about axle ping, but does this occur only when shifting into gear?

Have a great day!

I had axle ping, and your noise is not axle ping. Axle ping is when you put it into gear, or out of gear, but you are not rolling. It's the axle shifting inside the splined hole.

Your noise sounds much more like CV joints are worn.

I would check your dust shields around the rotors. Maybe something got hung up. There isn’t much that would make that “tinny” noise.

Agree to check those CV joints. Get the front up on jack stands or a lift so you can rotate axles. It could be CV joints in the front axles or the center driveshaft.
