I misjudged a driveway earlier today and hit the curb pretty good and did this.

(sorry for poor camera-phone quality)
I wanted to get a new set of A/S tires, but cannot find the tires I want locally in stock so I want to order them thru TireRack. I just checked my car again and after 4 hours I don't appear to have any air leaks. So...
1) Is the peeling of the tire around the rim-protection area significant structural damage that I shouldn't be driving on? ie: Can I keep driving like this until about Tuesday when my TireRack order will arrive?
2) Can a shop hammer back my rim lip or do I need to replace it?
Thanks guys,
-Aaron
Re: HELP... How Bad is This Tire Damaged??? (AaronSoto)

At a minimum switch tire to the rear so you won't lose steering if it blows. I'm still stuck with my bubbled tire since I don't have rings for my SSWs yet, and my OZs aren't here yet. Have to say, that Dunlop Wintersport M3 is quite a tire, has had that bubble for probably 500 miles, aggressive 1/4 launches and high speed autobahn runs, and bubble hasn't gotten any worse.
I do wish my OZs would show up soon though...

The tire seems to be driven with low speeds but MUST be changed IMO.
For the wheel,I am very sorry for that but seems that it can be repaired but will not seem like the original, when looked from the near,it can be recognized.

Tire is history.
As was stated, immediately put it on the rear and get some new ones ASAP
" Can a shop hammer back my rim lip or do I need to replace it?"
As for this, you are kidding, right?
JRL

The wheel can be fixed as new by a good wheel repair shop but you'll have to do w/o the wheel for the time of the repair.
I do not know what wheel is that but if it is not expensive then go and buy a new one.
For wheel repair shops search the Iternet. There are a few good ones in California.

Re: HELP... How Bad is This Tire Damaged??? (JRL)

Yes, the set I want is to get some all seasons on my 17" pegs so there's no rush for the 18" wheel repair and tire.
I can get a set of BFG KDWS put on immediately or I can wait for the Avon M550 A/S or ContiExtremeContacts to come in from Tirerack around Monday or Tuesday (those are the two I wanted). TireRack didn't have great reviews of the KDWS so that's why I'm hesitant to just get this taken care of now, but on the other hand the board here seems to have decent reviews for them...
-Aaron

It's repairable but it looks like a chrome wheel.
If so, it may be easier and cheaper to just buy a new one as after they rechrome it and all that it may cost more than a new one.
What's that off of, it doesn't look like an R size and offset?

All you can do is get a price from a wheel repair shop. That's a nasty little hit you took
One piece wheel, or two piece? (Never mind, I see it's a one piece)

Sorry about the mishap..that bites.
Re: KDWS...they are not as bad as the reviews indicate. I've had them for 25K miles, and they did great. I bought them for A/S traction and they were fine in the snow (contrary to the reviews, which rate them as "fair" if I recall). THis may or may not be an issue for you in CA, tho. At 25K, most of the wear was on the outer edges. Inside tread was still about 4-5mm.
Re: Wheel repair...try AWRS...http://www.mobilewheelrepair.com/ I've used them, as have others on Swedespeed. They come to your house or business..whereever your car is. Cost is $125/wheel in NJ, but I think others have gotten repairs done for less. JRL is right, though, that a chrome wheel will likely cost more to repair.

Aaron-
that SUCKS!!!! Sorry man.
You know - it is dangerous to drive on a tire like that..but I had that exact type of damage happen to a tire on my HOnda Prelude...I hit something and my sidewall had a nasty piece/chunk that would peel off like yours....I was young and stupid and drove on the tire for almost a YEAR like that. Yes...a YEAR. And you know me...I drive like I stole it...and I drove the STINK out of the tiers and nothign ever happened...but would I do that again now...NO WAY. I'd replace it. But I doubt it's gonna blow on you as to head to the tire shop....
better safe than sorry. the tires I had that went for a year with a chunk out fo teh sidewall were Yok A520s. nice tire for the money. I must have gone through multiple sets of those on my old Honda Prelude VTEC....
can you get PS2s...I love mine!!! great great tire.

Re: HELP... How Bad is This Tire Damaged??? (AaronSoto)

That part of the tire is call the "rim protector" and its supposed to protect the edge of the rim. As you can see it really doesn't work so well with Pirelli's. I did something similar a few years ago and went to the dealership and also checked with a tire store. This didn't think is was a real issue. I also ran at Watkins Glen with that tire and had no problems.
But sometime piece of mind is worth a few hundred bucks.

NO rim protector in the world will stop that

Re: HELP... How Bad is This Tire Damaged??? (AaronSoto)

Sorry to hear about the mishap. Looks like you took a nice chunk of metal of the lip. Best is to get a quote from a repair shop. I haven't seen a polished lipped wheel after a fix so I can't tell you how good they will turn out.
Regarding the tires, are you looking for A/S only? I can get you a very good deal on some Toyo T1-Rs.

Why is everybody forgetting about the spare tire? I would rather put that on then losing that tire in a turn and f everything up.
I had a buuble like Kelly on my pirellis i drove the car to the next tire shop and volvo for an alignment, did not go over 45mph.

Re: HELP... How Bad is This Tire Damaged??? ("R" Kelly)

R Kelly... I'm talking about the KDWS A/S tires, not the KDW2 which I know are good (almost got them on my 18's but went with the F1 GS D3's).
-Aaron
