it was a lease return and the car is at a broker which is not an authorized volvo dealer. they are only asking 13900 for the car!
i just read that this model has tranny issues which i'm thinking if it was defective, it would have broke by now.

I own a 2000 S70 AWD. Not aware of any tranny issues with these models. Most complaints seem to focus on the AWD system (same used in the V70 and XC70 until 2003), but mine's been great. As mentioned, you need to keep the tires of the same type and wear (faiure to do so can damage the AWD system -- probably a source of many complaints). That just hasn't been a big deal for me. Have a mechanic check out the AWD system, specifically the bevel gear, to whatever extent they can check it.
Other than the AWD, the car should be no different than a regular S70 glt. Good luck!

We purchased an early new 99 S70 AWD and it was nothing but problems for six weeks straight after delivery. Besure the recalls were performed. We love our '99 S70 GLT, if the AWD drive S70 you are looking at is a good one, it will be an enjoyable car. Good luck!

Chris,
Were the problems related to the AWD system, or do you think it was just a bad S70, regardless of the AWD?

Re: Help... 99 S70 AWD: Looking to buy but possible problems? (Duett)

We think it was a bad S70. All the AWDs had a fuel pump recall. All S70s had the turn signal recall, not sure what other recalls.
I don't recall all the exact issues, the ones off the top of my head:
- fuel pump wiring short left my wife sit in rush hour traffic -- week 1 of ownership.
- a sensor that kicked on the check engine light, replaced twice -- week 2
- driver's power seat stopped working -- week 3
- down significantly on power, updated program two times. never got a straight answer weeks 3 thru 6
- but after driving an AWD XC that was much snappier & quicker we said enough was enough. -- we only noticed this because the loaner cars we had felt much more powerful and they kept telling us it was the extra weight of the AWD system...I knew it was more than that.
If I can find the service sheets, somewhere in the garage I'll give you the specifics.
