Hi,
My dealer has priced out these two models, the 06 XC90 V8 with the Panopea wheels, Luxury package, 7 passenger and metallic paint ( ilike the Lava Sand/beige interior) with a $5800 discount.
He also has price out an 07 XC90 I6 which arrives tomorrow with Luxury Package, Dynaudio package and Convenience package. Same color combo.

They are 17$ apart!
What do I do?
Part of me likes to have the latest, the newest. I certainly appreciate the new touches to the '07 especially body coloured mouldings. I also like the normally aspirated I6, even though I haven't driven it, I am expecting a smooth powerplant. New touches inside and out but dynamically, essentially unchanged.
The V8, though...man. I test drove it back to back with a Land Rover HSE V8 and the difference was startling, almost scary to be honest. I like V8s. I have a 2005 Mustang GT and this thing sounded close to my Mustang! But as my wife's car, it is a little bit of a waste, but I drive it all the time when we are together so...AAARRGGHHH!!!!
So it really isn't a question of price. The 2006 Land Rover HSE is the same price as the Volvos. It has Nav (which I don't care for, but I guess if it's included, great), 540watt Harmon Kardon, 19" wheels, but thirstier and a little overkill for our purposes (Mt. Everest is far away)). Both will be great wintertime which can be long and hard in my neck of the woods. The LR3 has better presence and, IMO, drives slightly nicer, but tighter cargo (their space advantage is in height, the Volvo being a foot deeper behind the back row than the LR3).

What would you do?
Thanks.

If the XC90 is what you want....V8 all the way. Haven't you learned that being a first year Volvo guinea pig is sometimes painful?

V8! Just for the sound and umph, the V8 power plant and tranny has been great!
If an Aux input is important to you, go with the 07, other than that they are really close, and I prefer the black wheel arches on the 05-06 V8 over the body colored ones, in general, when I compared them side by side I liked the more aggressive look of the 05-06 vs the 07 which has a sloping front / rear bumper (at the top) where the 07 if more soft.
If more aggressive looks are in your book, go for the 06 V8!

Quote, originally posted by coladin »

I certainly appreciate the new touches to the '07 especially body coloured moldings.

If it is the body colored body side molding you like, the V8 had it since intro in 2005 (door handles too!)
Re: Help! 06XC90 V8 or 07XC90 I6? (MagoonR)

See, but that's the thing. I think first year concerns usually have to do with niggling issues such as electronics, trim, idiosyncracies...those things surely must have been worked out by now. The XC90 is not a new vehicle, this is the fourth year of the vehicle. Now I truly don't think that a new engine, in this day and age will go !POOF!, likewise the tranny. I find with new cars it is all the little things that tend to get ironed out after a few years...thise little things that drive owners .
The LR3, from what I have heard have been better in '06. the '05 model had some growing pains not unlike the 03 XC90. Both of these cars were truly new, although I beleive that the LR3 was in the UK in 2004. When you drive it, you feel like royalty (honestly, as silly as it sounds) and it has tremendous road appeal. Soe will hate it, but for 7 pass. duty, it is really between these two. The LR3 is more unique in my neck of the woods. Very comfortable and it rides nicer, IMO, than the XC90. Packaging-wise, the XC90 has more cargo.
I am just worried that the LR3 will strand me. It may be my paranoia as most that I have spoke to have nothing but glowing things to say about their LR3s. Except for 12mpg, of course!

Apparently my dealer it is similar to the 2.5T, if not slightly better due to the I6 technology combined with a 6 speed tranny.

Re: (need4spd)

Iknow, I know, you don't have to tell me about V8s! My Mustang satisfies that V8 craving, but for the same price as the I6, I can have a brand new V8.
The V8 has body coloured mouldings? Man, I must go and check it out again. The 06 and 07 should be side by side tomorrow. Good to know, though.

Same model with new engine is different from new model with same engine.

The new Si6 is a great engine. If you want the fastest, buy the V8. If power isn't the most important thing (and if you want to "save" a lot of money) buy the Si6.

I would go with the V8 all the way! I don't know what the price difference would be between the 06 and 07 but the 07 has some new features you might like. If you can get the 06 at a reduced price, go for it!
On a side note, I recently took a trip to Los Angeles from the San Francisco Bay Area. I averaged 22 MPG on my V8 cruising at 70mph and some misc. city driving. Drop the throttle to 65mph and you get even better. Not bad for a V8

I drove an 07 today. Overall, the looks and quality feel substantially better in the 07. Suspension feels noticeably firmer. Alot of the textures and materials on the vehicle have gotten nicer.
The car itself is not much (if any) faster than the 2.5T. The fuel economy is also only 16/22, so only one mpg better than the v8 (prob more in the real world).
For the looks and suspension I would have to go with the 07 (not to mention the aux input, which would be a necessity for me) If you need power though, you gotta go V8.

I have the 2006 V8 and have had it since last September. No problems and my wife and I love it. My sister has owned several Range Rovers and they have ALL been junk. She had a brand new Range Rover, I forget the exact name but it was the most expensive one and had nothing but trouble and had the engine replaced under warranty. They replaced the engine and about 6 months later she had nothing but trouble again and the previous two were also nothing but trouble.

Re: Help! 06XC90 V8 or 07XC90 I6? (dugums)

Interesting.
I have eliminated the LR3. As much as I like the look of it, the cargo behind the 3rd row is the deciding factor, and alos that sneaking suspicion that it will abandon me.
So now it is 06XC90 V8 and 07 XC90 I6. Same inside and out basically except for the powertrains.
You are the second person to report on a test drive of the 07 and with a middling review of the I6. Now if the I6 isn't any faster with more bhp and same torque, albeit a different non-turbo torque curve, I am slightly mystified. I know turbo power, but is it maybe the feel of not going fast rather than it not being fast?
When I had my S60 T5, it felt like it could devour a 330i. When I drove a 330i for a test it felt slow because of its linear power band, no turbo rush. I wonder for those coming from a turbo if it's because there is no "turbo rush" that confuses? The T5 and 330i (in 2002) were basically the same, stats-wise.
I am kinda leaning towards the V8 right about now. Hopefully the 07 is in today.

Re: Help! 06XC90 V8 or 07XC90 I6? (coladin)

You got me thinking with that post, so just for you (lol) I decided to go race an I6 vs 2.5t. Both were new, so no break-in difference or anything like that. Me and a co-worker switched off and took a few passes.
The results are: Too close to call (ha!). A couple of times the I6 pulled it out and a couple of times the 2.5T did.
What was noticed: Smoother (not faster) shifting for the new trans, and again suspension is better on 07 as compared to either 06 2.5t or v8.
Trying to help, but they are very close. Obviously your choice is between V8 and 07. As I stated before, if you need the power you gotta go v8. It leaves both i6 and 2.5t in the dust.

DING! DING! DING! DING! We have a winnar!! Go V8. Let all the other suckers uh... consumers purchase the new I6. Give the I6 a chance in a few years. The inlaws bought an '06 2.5T recently and that's an engine that's been in production for 13 years. You think that it's been improved upon and has nearly all the "bugs" out of it in that time span?

Re: Help! 06XC90 V8 or 07XC90 I6? (dugums)

Hi there. I am brand new to this forum. But wanted to add my comments to this string ... as I have been racking my brain for the last few days on whether to get the '06 V8 or '07 I6.
After some considerable thought (and an unbelievable deal on the '06), I went with the V8. Sure I won't have signals in the mirrors or an aux jack, but the V8 engine is far superior.
If you're still trying to figure things out, my vote is for the V8. I don't think you'd be sorry.
