Hi Guys, Im in the market for a 850R and I have found one, but due to the mileage being quite high I have a few questions. First of all the car has approximately 200 000kms on it(135 000m) How is the longevity of those 2.3 litre 5cylinder turbos? Are the turbos known to fail? Basically I want your opinions about this car. According to the owner it is in MINT condition and that its all highway miles, but still. 200 000kms is 200 000kms no matter which was you cut it. I plan on giving this car the BSR stage 3 tratment, so I need to know if this car would be a good candidate for a power increase. Please forgive my newbie-like questions. This would be my first Volvo(Im a VW man-VWVortex.com) so Ive got a lot to learn.
Thanks,
Jason

From what I hear if it was well taken care of you should get 200,000miles out of the turbo. As for mods, the general consensus is that these engines can take ~315hp before a lot of things need to be replaced.

I imagine some little things will have high wear if not already replaced. If the car is good condition some power mods should pose no problem in my opinion. The things that may wear out would wear anyway without mods, the engine should still readily accept a little fine tuning!

Most 850s go through a series of fairly major replacements at around the 100K mile mark, after which they go into maturity with only regular wear items needing replacement.
This of course depends on the driving style and maintenance regime, though high power cars are usually owned by enthusiasts who may drive quickly but also look after their vehicles.
If you're faced with a thick file of bills to show servicing, replacement and quality fluids added, I'd give the car a good trial.
If however the seller temporises and fails to provide documentary evidence of good care, walk away fast.
