Heated seat burnt my a**!

Hey guys,

So on top of the regular bs my car has been giving me lately, I came out of a midterm today and am driving a girl home, when my ass feels a bit cold. I turn on my seat heater, and the left cheek gets really hot, pretty quickly... then this nasty and disgusting smell arises and we're both thinking "wtf smells?" I get out of the car a few seconds later to find that the seat heater burnt a freaking hole in my freaking atacama! WTF!

My car is well out of the Volvo warranty and I'm still trying to figure out if theres any way in hell that my 3rd party warranty will cover this but I am a little pissed!

What should I do?

Way back in '87 same thing happened when I was driving my father's '87 Audi 5000 CS Quattro. The seat basically got super hot and probably shorted out. Can't remember the fix, but this sounds like a similar issue.

Happened to my friends 04' VR two weeks ago. He was out of warranty and dealer refused to good-will it. So he called Volvo North America and they sent a field tech/rep out to check it and gave the OK to warranty it. I suggest you try the same route. Good luck and sorry to hear about yo' rear. HA!

What year and model was your friends car. I believe that this same thing may be happening to my car.

looks life the realiability period for the heat sensor on the heated seats is about 4.25 years...
The tampon must have something to do with this period you speak of!!

Currently litigating one of these on an Escalade that casued permanent burns.

Long story short, microfractures can cause these things to get HOT in a hurry.

MFG's need to have a sensor in there.

The P2 seat heater grid is pretty good and usually lasts the life of the car.
It was the 850's that shorted out and caught fire!

Yours is not the norm. However as we all know any part can fail at any time, it's just a piece of machinery.

Out of curiosity, how does one assess that considering the cars have been out for only about 4 years now? Maybe we're on the verge of an epidemic, especially with winter coming up? I know I'm certainly worried, my wife uses them on high every single day now that it's cold.

Because P2 started in 2001, not 2004 :)

P2's have been out since 2000 (?) for the S80 and 2001 for the V70 / S60.

You didn't hear this from me but next time you smell that burning smell..................................................

No kidding. If this happened to me out of warranty, I'd go park my R in a field of grass or hay on a dry day and turn on the seat heaters and walk away. Maybe leave an open full gas can on the seat too. My deductible is way less than a seat replacement.

This happened to my friends mom's car. Turns out a wrapped tampon fell out of her purse, worked its way under the seat, melted and caused a short.

Before you try and go through Volvo NA, check to make sure theres no tampon.

This same thing happened to me. On the drivers seat left bolster, it felt like there was a needle poking me in the thigh when the heated seat was on maximum. Thought a sharp object was under the leather but them I realized that if I apply pressure to the seat, it gets really hot in that one space. Hasnt burned through the leather, but it appears that my heated seats are now not functioning.

Havent checked the fuses yet, but this is really concerning and am very interested in following this thread. Possible safety issue.

Y-GTR what year is your R?

So far the others I've looked up have all ben '04's,,, now the design of the seats is slightly different, though i suspect the heating elements are exactly the same. I'd be pissed if it burned through my atacama as well.
