Headliner Instructions Diagrams Avalible?

I've narrowed down a rattle that my headliner is making whenever I drive. It's most likely a broken clip or something that is not seated well and most definitely the rear of the liner doesn't have enough support clips or whatever to keep it from making noise.

Are there any diagrams or instructions on removing the headliner (just the aft portion from the forward seats) ? I think some 3M VIB tape or velcro patches should keep it up.

@-KJ- - Great diagrams, but the description stops when the headliner is lowered. Do you know how to remove/swap it?

I consider swapping my grey headliner for a black one. I got the parts figured out... but I wonder how to get the headliner out of my S90 (and the new one in). It doesn't seem to fit through the trunk (with seat backs folded forward).

Is there an official recommendation from Volvo for getting the headliner replaced? Will I have to remove the windshield?

@*********** - Thanks for your reply! Wow... removing the windshield for the headliner is a thing I was a bit afraid of. I assume it's quite an intricate task to have the sensors in the windshield recalibrated? Or can the headliner also be swapped through the rear window?

About the price for the parts: Well, living in Europe, we have quite a few options to pick second hand parts from. You can get your hands on inexpensive swap parts in excellent condition e.g. directly from Sweden.

Having said that, it'll still be around 800 EUR for all the parts... And yea, that's what it's worth (to me). The car is crystal white on the outside and all black inside (except for the headliner). I really love that strong black/white contrast and I think it's not that much money for a change that has such a big impact on the interior.

I recently had a sunroof issue and the headliner had to be removed.....it's quite the process and can easily not go very well. The trim is so delicate that it's almost impossible to end up with fingerprints or marks on the headliner along with the A pillar trim. Then you have to deal with side curtain airbags carefully, and getting all the clips to seat correctly can be very tricky. I had to take my car back and they had to work with it a second time to stop the rattle that developed after reinstalling it.

Best of luck but just be warned.....this is something that sounds fairly easy but can go extremely wrong. It is soooooo easy to work with a headliner and crease it and then it's ruined. The dealership ruined my original and had to buy a second one for over $1000. I have the black headliner and I'm not a fan.....the car becomes so dark. I have another S60 with the lighter headliner and why it's not as "sporty" to look at, from a practical standpoint it's easy to see why Volvo has made very few cars with black headliners.

Yea, well... it's not the first time I mod my cars with details like this. I am pretty confident that it'll be all right. But I'm well aware that the headliner is a super sensitive part that can be ruined in seconds if creased.

Yet, I'm still checking if it can be removed through the trunk, if the trunk's inner covering left and right is removed. Theoretically it should be possible. Really don't want to remove the windshield, as this appears to be the most invasive step in the procedure.

About the curtain airbags: I don't think they need to be touched at all, as they're not mounted against the headliner, but attached to the roof above the windows AFAIK. They should remain in place, untouched.

Anyway, I'll report back once the operation is complete.

Like I said….mine was just replaced and the windshield must be replaced. If there was an easier, less labor intensive way Volvo would have techs use it to remove. It won’t fit through the trunk.

airbags are tethered to the a pillars which have to be removed to remove the headliner. So yes, you do have to touch them. Plus one must be slide the headliner past the bags and it’s easy to catch the assembly and disturb them.

you must also remove the city safety sensor array, requiring recalibration and mounting. I’m not trying to discourage you, but….I think you are WAY over simplifying the complexity of a headliner removal. My dealer took days to compete it.

As assumed, the headliner can be removed through the trunk with the rear seats folded down. It's a very fiddly process so it make sense that the official advise is to remove the rear glass and then have the headliner removed through the upper opening. However, if you have the bulky, inner lining for the trunk removed, have a skilled friend helping and be super careful and patient, the opening in the trunk will be enough to get the headliner out undamaged.

On the pics you can see the old headliner removed and the new charcoal liner ready to be installed (I'm still missing the inner cover for the moon roof, which needs to go in first).

Do you have any photos of the rear underside of the headliner? I would like to see what the mounting points look like.
