Before embarking on our 2-week OSD (Overseas Dream) trip this Saturday, I loaded up a variety of suitcases and took them downtown to "test drive" the trunk space in the dealership's XC40. It's remarkably roomy for a compact SUV.

Next, to convince the family that we don't need to bring everything in the house with us.

And I see the dealership installed the $900+ tailer hitch. What a waste! ...greedy dealers!

Some of those bags might fill out a bit when they are actually packed! When we picked up our XC90 this past May, the car next to ours in the parking lot was an XC40 that was being loaded by a family from Chicago. They were a couple and their adult daughter and they were having a time of it getting all the luggage situated in the back of the XC40. They jokingly suggested that we take some of their stuff. They ended up having to put some in the middle seat next to the dad who was traveling there. Suggestion: travel light! :)

is it too late to change your order to an XC60? Roof Box!

We mailed back a couple packages mid way in our trip. Mostly chocolate and such from Belgium. Packages were pretty well crushed by the time they got to Portland.

IMHO, packing bags and loading bags into a car are both a bit of an art by themselves.

My wife is a true artist when it comes to packing our bags. They are usually solid, no matter how much or little we carry. No idea how she does it.

In cars like the XC90/60/40, I found that sometimes you may want to place most larger bags upright and sideways if they fit. This placement tends to fit more bags as they occupy more vertical space. It requires a bit more work because they won't roll on/off as easily as what neovolvophyte did for his picture but, when space is at a premium, the idea may help.

We also test drove luggage at our dealership before picking up our XC40 in Sweden. A couple of friends came along with us so we had four adults and all the luggage for a week and a half trip to fit. We all fit very comfortably. We don’t like to overpack for vacations because we aren’t fans of lugging a ton of luggage through airports and in and out of hotels.

This thread with comments of traveling light, the art of packing, the beauty of traveling in your new Volvo for a great road trip across Europe brought back memories of our last OSD.

It seems for each progressive OSD we need to carry more as our family has grown from the first (our honeymoon), 2nd with 2, to 3rd with 3. For our 5 week trip we traveled with a mountain bike in a Thule hard case for our 11yr old, a Bugaboo Chameleon (stroller with standing board) and a car seat for our youngest, a high back booster for our middle one, 3 suitcases, a duffle bag, and at least a back pack for each one of us plus camera backpack and other stuff acquired throughout the trip.

It was a fantastic trip that included summer camps for the kids and lots quality time without them during the day and with them and friends in the evenings and weekends. We look forward to our next OSD!

Gotta love the carrying capacity of the XC90 - the Thule RoundTrip hardcase fits head in and everything else packed artfully over it.

Thule hardcase with MTB - both arrived safely to Göteborg ;)

Road tripping - rest area on A7 in Germany

This was by the end of the trip on our way to The Netherlands prior to drop off at port.

The only time we test drove luggage was when we planned for our 3 week long Boxster EuroDelivery trip... with Volvo's it always fits :)

Bottom line, carry what you're comfortable with and would like to have to make it a memorable journey! The rest will fall into place - have a blast and congrats on planning your OSD!
