Re: Has anyone actually broke the GEARTRONIC? (gg)

don't know about the GT, but the clutch is iffy on the 6 speed, the tans itself is off the R so no way to break that. I would assume the GT is the same way, wwwwway too strong.

I have basically the same mods as you and no problem with my GT to date. I use GT exclusively when i'm driving.
I think 265hp to 270hp is probably accurate with 310 ft lbs of torque.

and why am i asking this? because my local BSR dealer didnt want to install stage 3 kit on my car because they said the low end torque WILL BREAK THE GT.
"don't know about the GT, but the clutch is iffy on the 6 speed, the tans itself is off the R so no way to break that. I would assume the GT is the same way, wwwwway too strong."
then why would it be limited in 1st and 2nd gear?

Re: Has anyone actually broke the GEARTRONIC? (gg)

I haven't heard any stories of broken GT yet. It's the same for the S60R as well. 1st and 2nd gear is torque limited. There is one R owner that is pushing 360whp with NOS and he has a GT. I'm guessing if there will be a broken GT, he'll be one of the first. There are a few GT S60R owners with RICA upgrade that has the torque limiter removed.
I believe FFinn was the first user to point out the BSR does not allow Stage 3 for S40 GT. Sux, cuz I want to do Stage 3 one of these days.
Maybe we can convince BSR to remove tq limiter on 2nd gear. That'll make me feel better.

Questions:
(1) Why is there a torque limitation on 1st and 2nd gear? There must be a somewhat reasonable explanation if they bothered to put it there in the first place. If the tranny is built to withstand the torque then it makes no sense.
(2) When driving a GT and manually changing the gears, does the electronically controlled tranny reduce revs for the gear change, or do you lift a bit when the new gear hits? I don't use the autostick function much, but I never knew if I could just mash the gas pedal and switch gears.

Re: Has anyone actually broke the GEARTRONIC? (vlv4life)

i believe the torque limitation was something like 60% of stock torque..
so far on problems with my GT, and im also at around 400nm. but just to be on the safe side, flushed out the ATF at around 20k miles. putting in a ATF cooler soon as well.
i know someone in a modded, older S40 T4 also with a AW box... hes been trying to break it for the longest time so he can put in a manual transmission but to-date, thing still works pretty well.

Perhaps the torque limitation is to prevent breaking the tranny on hard AWD launches (a la drag racing)?

Well I must admit, I don't have much experience with it (just a test drive), the salesman probably wouldn't have liked that very much!
I mostly drove it just to show my wife the difference between this type of tranny vs the DSG (and just how different they are, no matter what our salesman tried to tell us )

interesting , however doesn't the geartronic handle more torque than the 6 spd? wasn't this Volvos reasoning for offering the new D5 with Geartronic only????

The GT's break but they do in stock models also. So far there hasn't been any direct evidence that tuning desrtoys GT's. It will probably reduce the lifespan a bit. Flush in time, even when Volvo says it isn't needed.

So far there has only been a 4 cylinder manual gearbox and a 5 cylinder gasoline version which probably doesn't allow 295lb-ft of torque according Volvo's specs. The geartronic is limited to 258lb-ft of torque.
I think one other reason is that the manual V50 D5 would outperform it's larger brothers..
Maybe a D6 will be availabel at a later time for the S60/V70 and by then the V50 D5 can receive some more power.
