Hi There!
I currently own a 1996 960 sedan - in great shape, has 77k miles on it. I am wondering if I should start thinking about selling the car now and get a v70 awd wagon or a XC, I wouldn't mind having awd or 4wd. But people keep on telling me to hang on to this car and keep until it won't run anymore!
I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions
Paula

I would say, keep it and drive it. Those older rear wheel drive Volvos are the best. I only say that because I love them. Though for practicality sake, if what you're looking for is an up-to-date model with the added safety of all wheel drive, then go ahead and part with it. Just make sure you sell it to someone who will love it. Those things will be a dying breed in about 15 years. Heck, they already are! That's why there are us fanatics abound.
On the one side, the new S/V 70 AWDs are pretty nice and quick to boot. And they are some of the most attractive cars around. On the other is the old tried and true RWD 900 series. With that small number of miles on it, it's just past the break-in period and it has the potential to go for another 300k! You might get a nice sum if you were to sell it to someone who knew the true worth of the car.
I kind of feel like the wrong person to respond to this, because I would feel the same way about having to make a decision like that. I figured I would put in my two pennies though.

Keep your 960, its a gem. It can last indefinately with a little love. Besides, its a Volvo with a straight six! That car is still safer than most of the traffic on the road so don't worry. If you like your car keep it. Don't fix what isn't broken. In a while from now you will be happy you did and then you can buy a newer one and keep the 960 Frankly I wish I had one, comfort of the 940, very nice platform of the 740/760 with a lot more power going straight to the rear wheels, a beautiful combination.
-Poritz

Hey Paula-
I'd keep the car and drive it for as long as it'll go. I almost dropped my 240 wagon a few years back and I'm soooo glad I didn't. I will not comment on what it was going to be replaced with, but I'm glad I'm thinking clearer now. Plus it's a RWD wagon. Is your's blue? I saw one for sale down in vancouver when I was down there over the Holidays...sitting in someones front yard. Nice enough that my brother and I stopped to take a look at it.
Brian

My mom just got a 97 964 to replace her 91 945 with 184k miles. It's awesome. My dad wants to get one aswell instead of buying a new Mini Cooper-S. Then my family will have three 900series, me with a 940. My mom's has 73k and it drives wonderfully. I don't see why would wouldn't like it. My mom took her's in to get some recall work done(something called Campaign 80) and she was given a v70 for the day. She said it didn't match up to her 960 in terms of comfort and driving. I love her 960 and I love RWD. I'm glad you've decided to keep it. I am sure you will be just fine this way. You won't have to worry about payments also.

You made the right choice. My wife's 940 is a dream to drive. It's not as powerful, or as silent as a newer Volvo, but the ride is smooth and relaxed, you can steer it one-handed (I don't recommend this in a FWD Volvo!), and it costs practically nothing to run.
I still have my '83 240. I bought it ten years ago, and I still love it!
