I am sure that some of you folks have been keeping up with this event. On Saturday, they came through my state and city, Little Rock, Arkansas. The event started on April 25th and ends on the 30th. Audiworld has some great coverage of the event, check it out:
Gumball 3000 Rally Coverage: April 25-30, 2002!
Some cool stuff, the guy driving this Ferrari F50 below was taken to jail for doing 187 mph in a 70 mph zone in Texas on the way to Dallas. He ended up paying the fine and arrived in Dallas 5-hours late.

Zerin in the APR Stage III Audi S4 chase car being pulled over in Arkansas.

-Drew

Yeah, I was thinking about going to check them out last Thursday night when they were in town. Got a busy day on Friday, couldn't afford not to wake up in time...so didn't go.
I wonder why the F50 didn't just keep on going when they clock'd them at 187 mph. I would dare the cops to chase me with helicopter at that speed. J/K of course...
Man, I'd hold it at 187, what do you have to lose? Just hit 200, why not? You know you want to... That's why my car doesn't do 200...

Dayum, that is nuts. 187 MPH on a public highway and they let him go after he paid a fine? They should have shredded his liscense on the spot
Sure he could have kept doing 200mph, outrunning both the cop cars and helicopters. But I'm sure the cops wouldn't have to wait too long for him to run out of gas at those speeds.

Supposedly this yellow Diablo below was clocked at 174 mph in a 65 mph zone! Scweeeeet! Notice how the Gumball stickers on the F50 above are almost ripped off because of the high speeds.

-Drew

Don't forget, all the helicopter has to do is go about 150mph (very easy, even for a cropduster)...the helicopter is at an altitude where the pilot can ease back adn still maintain contact with the car. Also, the helicopter can just fly straight thus diminishing the need to match the Ferrari's speed. The car cannot keep driving straight...
Yannis

I remember one of those FOX police chases shows where a crotch rocket left the helicopter in its dust.
Either way, I want to know how that fool still has a license after a stunt like that.
What is this Gumball rally thing anyway? Do these guys race across the country on public roads? How the hell do they get away with that?

At an altitude (up to 1000ft), all a helicopter has to do is 120 to 150mph and he can stay with anything on the ground that moves up to 200mph...do the math...
On the other hand, today's helicopter can go more than 180+mph (mostly military applications such as Apaches) and there are MANY Police helos that have top speeds of up to 154mph, plenty t keep up with almost any car that does not need a race track to be driven on.

Bottom line is this (and has been demonstrated countless times by morons who think that they can): you cannot outrun a helicopter in a car or a motorcycle.

Yannis

If he went 187, I don't think he's too worried about what might happen. He probably paid the fine to get out of jail, and kept on driving w/o a license.

Gosh, I would love to see one of these guys (not the F50, but the rest) getting chased by a Police Edition S70 T5...hehehe, I am sure those cars were "tricked" to go over 150mph, I know in Europe they do!
Yannis

Some of those specialty cars were flown in just for this event (thus they have real Euro tags), and some of them have Euro tags for 'show/novelty' purposes.

quote:
2) Who pays the tickets? Since most of these people are very well off, remember the entrance fee for this race is around $8,200 USD.
-Drew
