My R has been grinding when upshifing into second (during the gear lever move into second) following a full to almost full throttle burst in 1st if I get to at least 5k in 1st, followed by a pretty quick upshift. I noticed this very early when the car was new, but it went away after I put a few thousand miles on - now I have 27k on the car and it seems to be doing it again. Anyone else have this issue?
2nd seems to be the only gear that's grinding, so maybe the 2nd gear sychro is bad.

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (Grendel)

Either the shifter cables are out of alignment or, yes, 2nd gear synchro is going bad.
Not common with these trannies though at low miles
You also may have a clutch problem starting.

Sounds like you are still using the first revision shifter cable setup.
There is a an update, makes a lot of difference.

I have the same problem on occasion. Can you elaborate on the shifter cable update? Is there a TNN? Is this related to the fact that I can not shift into reverse when it is cold out?

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (Johann)

Thanks for the suggestions. I do still have the original shifter linkage - I never had any buzzing issues, so I never got the update. I guess I'll have to make a trip to the dealer. I'll probably just tell them the shifter is buzzing in addition to the grinding - otherwise they might not upgrade the cables.

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (Grendel)

Hah, I think that my R heard me commenting that it had become so reliable it was boring (or it got jealous of my visits to the Audi dealer to drool on the RS4s) because my shifter cable issue is suddenly back as well.
I had the same issue at around 5k miles and now it's back at 29k. The problem happens with brisk acceleration. It initially was happening with the 1-2 shift but has now moved to the 2-3. I also had some buzzing from the shifter at high speeds on the highway. Although it happens less than 10% of the time it's annoying because you just don't know how much damage is being done to the tranny and whether I'll ever be able to prove it to Volvo if I end up with a prematurely worn clutch. I've got a service visit scheduled for Friday to get this fixed.

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (Grendel)

It might not be the cables. I know that when I shift real fast from first to second, it occasionally grinds. I think there is a short lag (milli seconds) between pushing in the clutch and when it actually engages. At first I thought that perhaps I didn't get the pedal to the floor before I shifted, but I did. If it only happens when you shift extremely quickly, it might be this. I have found it to be a very fine line between shifting very quickly, and very quickly enough to get the grind. oclv

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (oclv)

It only happens with mine during very quick upshifts above 5k from 1st to 2nd. The upshifts have to be pretty quick for the grind to occur. It will never grind on normal 1st to 2nd upshifts.

I have the same grinding 1st to 2nd gear. I have always had it and its most noticeable when you driver window. I actually had a Volvo mechanic in the car and he couldn't hear it nor could I until I put down my window and there is was, that Zing as it goes into 2nd. This doesn't happen in any other gear. I have had up dates on my shifting cables but the grind is still there. THe mechanic said it was because I was shifting too fast and there was nothing he could do about it.
I don't drag race so I'll just live with it.

Re: Grinding into second during "spirited" acceleration (Jayam)

There is no need to double clutch when going to a higher gear, only down shifting. The idea is to let the enging SLOW down when up shifting, but speed the engine up when down shifting. oclv

And JRL never has it happen because he is old and slow. As mentioned, you have to shift very fast to get the 1-2 grind. oclv

I could out drag you, out shift you, out drive you, out track you, ( most of you) any day of the week with one foot in a cast
I've just become tired and don't have the desire too much anymore.
But when there's a wippersnapper out there (even if he's just a couple of years younger than me, like yourself) BRING IT ON

Soooooooooooo, now he's TIRED, old and slow. JRL, my son and I are taking our R's to Infineon race track (old Sears Point) in Sept for two days of track days. Fly out to Reno and I will pick you up. You can drive my car. I would enjoy meeting you and we can have a blast on the track. Two days, and when you get comfortable, no speed limit. There is some time with a professional person, then time with a follow car, then progressively faster until they let you go as fast as you want. oclv

I only drive cars that are set up properly and to my liking.
If you want to pay for me to ship my car out, I'm sure we can work something out.
Been a few years now but I raced (Sears Point, IMSA) on the old configuration in 1976 with a 600 or so hp Corvette.
We were overcome that day with wheelspin and old technology tires as the car had too much power and incorrect gearing for those times and that track. There was nothing else available at the time for us to try, we cartainly didn't have the money to design and build a new gearbox.
No one ran 5 speeds (on big block cars at the time) they were just starting to develop ones that would handle the torque, so we were severly limited against the (BMW) CSL lightweights and the 911's of the time
(We sure were fast on the bigger tracks)!
Bottom line, Sears point is not my favorite track as I never had any good seat time there.
How about Willow Springs north of LA? Hey, I offered to let YOU drive my R. It is only under extreme duress that I even let my wife drive my R (and for a woman, she's a good driver). You have way more experience in high performance driving than I have. I just have 36 years of road experience, most of it over (and in some cases, way over) the ..........whatever. The first time I got stopped for speeding was in 1973 going 103 mph (in a 50). I don't know where you live in PA, but my in laws live at Seven Springs in the Allegheny mountains south east of Pittsburgh. We might be able to cross paths at some point. oclv
