Hi all,

I am new to the forum and I need some advise.

I have been working on a 64 544 sport and have the engine rebuilt but it's going to be a while before I drive it on the street.

I would like to start the egine and run it while getting ready for the street.

I am looking for a resinator and muffler and can only find a complete exhaust system for $400 or more.

Can you advise me of any aftermarket parts I can use?

WhenI got the car, it had a glasspack on it so I don't know the deminitions for the resinator or muffler.

This looks like a great forum with a welth of knowledge, glad to have found it.

Thanks,

Bill

Welcome to Swedespeed, Bill.

What is the condition of the existing exhaust system from manifold to tip of the tail pipe?

Do you have buddies at any local muffler shop?

Where are you located?

If the existing exhaust system is servicable and you wish to run both a muffler and a resonator the best bet may be to have a shop weld up in-stock generic parts as the OEM items are very $$$ compared to the costs of local fabrication.

Thanks.

Hi George,

Thanks for replying. The manifold and the two exhaust pipes are fairly new and in good condition. I was told that the resonator had an offset from the input side to the output side and you couldn't put a straight pipe in it's place. I'm not sure if that information is correct. I have the front pipe bolted to the manifold and have the second exhaust pipe hanging under the car and it looks as though a straight pipe will work. Is that correct? If so, I can just buy an aftermarket muffler and shoud be OK.

Do these cars need the resonator? Or does the lack of one make them very loud?

I live in Richmond Va. and don't have any connections with any muffler shops. If I don't use a resonator, do I need to install a heavy duyt muffler?

Thanks,

Bill

Very. The two pipes and exhaust manifold are stock parts.

Does the nresonator have an offset in it?

Thanks,

The resonator appears to be straight through...

...and the front silencer is offset...

Share the Volvo Part Numbers for the pieces you want and we will find the best deal online USA.

If you have a dual downpipe, it is not a 544 part because they didn't go to the dual downpipe until after the end of the 544 run - 1967 in most models. Nonetheless it is a good deal and adds several horsepower over the single downpipe manifold, so that is what you should use.
I would advise you to check out the local muffler shops, maybe talk to hot rodder friends, and see which does high-quality work at a reasonable price.

George,

That is the information I was looking for, thanks. That tells me a straight pipe can not be used to replace the front silencer.

Are you using a front silencer on your car and if not is the car loud?

Walrus,

Thanks for the advise and my car has a single downpipe.

I ran my 544 with a piece of flex pipe in place of the resonator (front silencer) for a while. The best description of the sound I can give is: a lawn mower playing a kazoo.

Call these folks on their toll-free...

(assuming you are USA-based)...

...and they will most likely want to back-order what is not in stock but instead just return here and we will find in-stock suppliers.

Thanks.
