What kind of damage do you think it would cause to the R? I am out in the middle of the plains with nowhere to hide or no overhang anywhere within 10 miles.
What do you think my insurance would do if the entire surface of my car was obliterated by hail? Would they actually declare it a total loss in your experience?
I'm nervous right now but I understand that it is just a car and can be replaced if need be...there are a lot of things more important but it still makes me nervous on what I will see when I get to my car. Hopefully the storm misses my base.

Oh boy. I hope the storm misses you. Depends how big the hail is really, if its like 1" big, it might cause little dents everywhere.

Re: Great - reports of possible 3/4 inch or larger hail at my work (pie_ya)

Seriously? Is this what I have to look forward to at Carson?
Knock on wood it misses you, but I can't imagine it being cheap to take hail dents out...

Parker is getting the brunt of it......hail, winds, funnel clouds, flying cows. j/k on the cows.

Most of the large hail storms are in Denver and beyond. Although there are a couple of cars in the parking lot that are pitted with deep hail pockets.

Golf ball sized hail will cause damage for sure. Smaller is less of a chance. I would say 2" diameter is the threshold for sufficient damage, hence the National Weather Service's new "severe" criteria for a t-storm. I had a burgundy 850 that had a rather miserable experience with a cumulonimbus cloud one summer afternoon

This is good to hear. My R has seen enough abuse through a NY winter and crazy KY ice storms. It does not need hail.
Can't wait to get out there though. Anyone going to the hill climb? Believe its the weekend after I get out there...

A few layers, and corrugated one at that to absorb. Make sure to tape/strap it down.

Perhaps a blessing in disguise. A large hail storm and the car is written off? Buy it off the insurance company for small $'s and have a cheap track car?

Re: Great - reports of possible 3/4 inch or larger hail at my work (pie_ya)

This week has been crazy - severe weather every single afternoon! I've been watching the NWS radar each day, ready to jump in my car and seek out cover. Unfortunately the only options in the vicinity of work are a few hotels with overhangs by the front door.
Sure hope this weather pattern passes soon - it's getting old!

Ya im so jealous. I moved away with little to no severe weather for the last 5 years and all of a sudden its crazy. climate change people. I went chasing last week in nebraska and wyoming (not the R of coarse) and saw some decent stuff. Right now the front range is blowing up but unless another cell initiates Co Sp. should be clear for a while.
I thought about offering hail now casting for Colorado people this week but figured I would spend all of my time looking at models and upper air charts instead of working.
Let me know if you need a forecast though. Ill put one together for ya if ya really need one.
Storm Prediction Center is reporting >1inch hain in douglas and elbert counties. radar shows pretty intense cores extending from east of greeley to east of Co. Sp. moving East North East.

A bunch of photos of hail from the storm that rolled through Castle Rock and Parker a few hours ago can be viewed at http://www.thedenverchannel.co....html
Thankfully no hail where I work, and the sun is out again. Hopefully pie_ya lucked out as well!

Re: (stormchasin_racin)

A year or two ago, one of the local Volvo dealers had their entire inventory totalled due to hail. It was so bad that the hail was punching holes in the car and going THROUGH the roof, trunk, hood, etc...

Park the car at the place 10miles away you are talking about, and either leg it, or put a bike in your trunk!
(I'd do it in a second)
