Got a copy of VADIS for my laptop, but no cable... any hints on what to use are appreciated!
Anything in particular that I need to know so I don't wreck my car when playing around with this? I am hoping to find a simple-to-use, self-explanatory software that will allow me to read out DTCs, change settings, and so on. I am a software engineer, so I like to think that I know what I am doing, but you never know ;-)
Thanks!

Re: Got VADIS, and now...? (marc007)

You need a VCT2000 (Volvo Communication Tool). They run about $2k.
Without one you can basically look up part numbers and service procedures and not much more.

That may be true, BUT I might try just getting a cord online through a company that does OBD II kits. You'll probably have to buy the OBD II software too, but at least you'll have the cord. You could probably find it for less than $100.

Go for it. Try Alex Peper's OBD-II. Cable and software ~$100. Read-only and still won't allow VADIS to talk to the car but at least you can read the major OBD-standardized codes through his software and get basic engine/emissions data.
It won't know anything about the CAN network either though.

For talking to ECU, etc. you need CAN-L (low speed CAN for OBD2). He said he will work on CAN-L for Volvo eventually but no date promised
LTA
I think you can use any "pass-through" device, although the interface will be a big hassle and you'll have to hack a bit. For more info about that kind of stuff, see http://www.drewtech.com

Re: (Andy Wehmeyer)

Marc007's original question is about how to use VADIS on his laptop to communicate with car.

Quote, originally posted by marc007 »

Got a copy of VADIS for my laptop, but no cable... any hints on what to use are appreciated!

Quote, originally posted by Andy Wehmeyer »

I think you can use any "pass-through" device, although the interface will be a big hassle and you'll have to hack a bit. I don't think anyone has been able to use any other cable or interface with VADIS.
There are ways to do some of the things VADIS does with much cheaper tools. The simplest of them is reading generic OBD-2 information and some smart guys hear are snooping Volvo's CAN and have started to reverse engineer some of it.
