The timing belt went out on my '98R this morning, so I am doing a high pressure search today. I've been offered an '06 R with GT, prem, conv, climate, and booster seats for $41000. Is this a good deal, and what should I be expecting generally?

That is quite an expensive timing belt...

Sounds a bit high IMO. Rumor has it that there is a $4,000 incentive out there so I would do the pricing research on edmunds and make a reasonable offer. You could also try carsdirect.com for an idea of pricing in your area.
Check out this recent thread...has some info on potential incentives out there....might help you decide if it's a fair price.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=55694
IMHO, I think you can do better, based on other posts on Swedespeed. I got my 04 R for $39K and change in the fall of '03, when there were no R incentives and dealers were typically charging over sticker. With more R's out there now, and with them being - generally speaking - slower sellers than the bread and butter Volvo's (coupled with the fact that there will be an 07 and thus the pressure to score one before they're gone is lower), I think there's generally more negotiation to be done on the quote you got.

If you are looking at the V, the incentive was mentioned at $2,000 since there's fewer produced. For a V, the price seems a bit more in line but still a tad high.

But you have a point, it adds cost that is not seen on resale.
But the premium package isn't low cost, it's still $2k!
The car's MSRP is $46,750. According to the pricer on MSN autos, the invoice is 43,534. Assuming that you are getting a $2k promo discount, he is asking you for $500 over invoice. Which isn't too bad.
That's assuming that MSN autos has the correct invoice pricing. In my experience, it tends to be a bit low.

I am kninda off topic, but there was mention above of an 07 R actually being made, does anybody know any more information on this? the last time I read a post about the issue it was that there was not going to be an 07. Are there any major changes planned for 07? Does anyone have any more info? When will 07's become available?

Based on this thread, Volvo has chnaged it's mind and will offer a 2007 R.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=54925
Since you're nearing the end of this model's cycle, don't expect any significant changes IMO.

Re: (JRL)

latest update:
that first offer I wrote about was from a far away dealer that was willing to pay for my airline ticket to come pick up.
this afternoon my local dealer offered me an '06 with GT, prem, and clim for 36,525 INCLUDING $9k for my now defunct '98R. They took the trade value off of the msrp, but I would not have expected to get more than $7500 on trade before the timing belt/tensioner issue, so it's a slightly better deal than it may seem at first. It's magic blue with Nordkap. I like that better than black saphire, which was the other one, but the other one has the booster seats (I do want em) and convenience.
Still not sure what to do. Even if I can swing a new R, I hate the thought that the perfected version might be out in a couple of years. Ready to start looking at monthly metro passes. . .

Are you talking about an S60R or a V70R? As I posted on another thread, I just paid $40,000 out the door, which was around $37,200 for an S60R with Premium, Climate, Convenience, Electric Silver, and GT, but is was a demo that the General Mgr. drove. Sticker was a little over $45,300. I like the GT, but only in the 2006 model plus my wife prefered the GT over the 6 speed, so a compromise. The price you quoted sounds a little high in my opinion and the traden in offer sounds terrible, basically giving him your car if I understood your post correctly. Which dealer in Nashville are you dealing with, I moved from Franklin, TN and almost bought the 2005 Black Sapphire from DW Volvo in Franklin, I believe they still have it.

Re: (C130)

It's a v70R that I'm looking at. From what I understand those run a little more, but I don't know if they're running $3800 more. And I don't know if they have the same incentives in place for the wagons. Plus, it does have the booster seats.
The second offer, from Nashville (Music City) Volvo is not as good. IT basically comes down to $41, 525 for GT, premium, climate, with an added $5k for my trade (what they told me they'd give me for it before I started looking at specific cars). And that $5k is for a 9 year old car with 90K miles and a busted timing belt and likely valve damage. I'm not sure if it's an alright deal, or if I'm just so far over the barrel that my perception is warped.
Been told my more than a few to stay the hell away from DW.

Not much help to you, but thanks for the thread.
This leads me to believe that in the first couple of weeks in August (when I return to the US) I should be able to find an 06 V with MT, booster seats, premium (includes NAV?) etc for south of $40k, maybe even $40k out the door?
Of course I think we tend to pay the "I live in CA" tax, but pricing stil seems reasonable.
