And the car feels like new...
I've given Tasca Volvo a before, they get another one. Todays venture involved an ECM update. Thanks to JRL for the follow-up on his post regarding a stutter issue a few weeks ago. I chased this damn stutter all over, turns out there was no mechanical problem.... I guess thats good. Anwyay:
-I was in and out in 25 minutes on a busy monday morning.
-As always, free car wash and coffee (that isnt awful)
-They turned up my heated seats at no extra cost
-They charged me for .75 hours, despite the 1hour standard
-The tech came out and told me it was obviously a loved R and the nicest condition for the mileage he had seen.
-Another tech said he liked the exhaust note (EST ftw)
Now, to retune it. The car is unbelievably smooth now but my butt-dyno is very sad.
Just not enough positive experiences on here. I did 2 turns on the wastegate yesterday, and with the stutter gone, I am way in love again. Oh baby oh baby, can't wait to drive you home

Oh and I saw a beautiful 06-07 ticama at Gasparro's wine store (Federal Hill) Saturday. Nicely tinted, newly detailed, sexy.

Re: (phuz)

It was usually around 3500-4000, but it was not uncommon to see it happen anywhere above 2500. Top end also seems improved, she would loose almost all power over 6k. (But i only got to rev it out once between the dealer and work)
I had ruled out the 3500rpm stutter because it was not the rule. 4700ish also seemed a regular trouble spot.

to the fix.
I wonder what happens that a simple ECM update will revert it back to its original running condition.
Now if you re-tune the car, won't you overwrite their updates?

Re: (phuz)

Good question phuz. The way I understand it, no.
To start:
-I did NOT reflash to stock first. Had RICA stage 1.
-Dealer said everything went smooth, so this did not matter.
-Car is SLOW now, so I can tell its no longer tuned.
Now I need to:
-Use PPC loader to download (or maybe just read?) the new ECM software, as I don't think I can straight upload again.
-I willl have to go through RICA or the seller to get a new map, based on this new software. (I think this can all be done online with RICA actually, I have a password for a website that I think does this exact thing)
-I can then upload the new tune I'm given.
So the stage 1 is an "add on" to the base software, not a complete overwrite. I imagine it just alters some key values and not much else. I am reminded of Lucky stating "this is a torque based system, not boost" - so its likely that tunes more-or-less just alter what the car's target torque is, and some other required changes to go with this (at least for stage 1 - above this may be completely different since there is new hardware to incorporate. And also, I have no idea and this is all a guess )
Now at the dealer they COMPLETELY overwrite the software, so any altered values are wiped out.

Gotcha.
Keep us informed. That process looks like the things I have read before. I assumed you were just going to overwrite what was there. lol

Re: (phuz)

Well there is always a chance that the stutter was something the RICA tune changed, but I highly doubt it. It had a stutter previous to tuning it just wasn't as pronounced (more power/fuel/boost = more noticeable fluctuations)
If the RICA tune does cause any issue Ill certainly post it here, but I have high hopes.

Re: (imageomega)

I suspect you will have to contact RICA as your PPC will see the ECU as "new" and thus it won't tune. I had an ECU update and then the PPC said "read car?" essentially indicating that it needs to download the ecu parameters for RICA to then build your tune.
Hopefully I'm wrong as it always takes a couple of days.

John, I think you're right on.
However I thought you could do the "read car", upload this data to the website, and have a tune ready pretty quickly (as in instantly)?
Even so, I'll wait a few days if I have to. SO WORTH IT to be able to hit the gas and not have it go AHEIUT!$#^HGEOWHGG$^HSEHGOW!!!

Re: (imageomega)

That is some very descriptive writing...
If you have direct access to RICA it might be faster. I understand they can get a little backed up sometimes. It took me about 2 days to get the updated file.

Re: Good dealer experience - Stutter is gone (imageomega)

Do you have any info (number, modules, etc..) regarding the software update? Anything at all?
Thanks

I had a SW update available at Volvo a couple weeks ago, but it was for the brake to ecu module communications or something, and it was $100+ for the update, so I said "let me fix what's wrong right now, and I'll worry about getting everything else sorted after". Now I'm thinking there's something to this update. I hope, anyway.

Re: (JoeLvo)

No problem, Ive got my fingers crossed for you.
I've only gotten to put 30miles on her since the update but the car is completely different. Wastegate helped no doubt, just did that yesterday, but it seriously drives like a brand new car now. Before it felt like it had those 70k behind it.
Also, the WG tweak is FANTASTIC. In conjunction with this update:
-Can hear turbo a bit more in lower RPM
-300ft/lbs at 1950rpm isn't a huge lie anymore
-2nd and 3rd no longer care if RPMs are in the 2k range
-Similar to above, starting in 2nd isn't lagpossible now
-Exhaust "pops" a lot more now (every shift over 4500 so far)
I had an excuse last time I was asked to the track, now it is so on!!

As soon as mine is fixed, whether it be SW or coils or whatever, I'm crankin it. I want to love my car so bad, but it just doesnt love me back right now.
