There is a top end run at Wesbank Raceway up here in Johannesburg on the 17th of June. I am going to take my R for the 3 runs allowed. The run consists of a run up to a bend which you can very safely exit at 110kmh and then a 1.4km straight to run till your max or the braking zoning dictates otherwise. Running on 95 octane and temps of around 18 degrees celsius and altitude of 1500m, anybody any ideas or predictions as to what my 2006 R with 6000km on the clock will run? Also, how will the brakes on the R cope with a stop/slow down from a high speed like that?

You cant get any better than 95 octane?? I'm guessing this is a RON number. Altitude doesnt help and 1.4k isnt exactly a very long straight. Dont know what to say, perhaps 240 kmh or so

Re: (JCviggen)

95ron is the best we have available in South Africa. You are right, 1500m above sea level does not help, why do you think we love turbo charge motors here. Normially aspirated you lose almost 30% in Johannesburg due to the altitude. My S40 T5 only managed 183kmh on that straight. Yes, it is a short straight, but this is the only race track in Johannesburg that allows us to use it for these puproses. Safer than trying it out on the road. Some people have rumored that we will be able to purchase 98RON unleaded which is termed racing fuel in South Africa. If this is the case maybe I should try some of that. I am kind of thinking the R might only manage 195kmh down the straight, the Subaru STi's are getting 200kmh but they exiting the bend at 135kmh.

Re: (CyberRacer)

you'll be in and stay in 4th gear I'd think. Brakes shouldn't be an issue and you'll not even get near the Top Speed.... I'll venture that you'll do 190 kph max.
If it was a longer run, a shift at 6100 to 5th would be worthwhile but I think you'll in this case you'll be slowing just as you shift.
Of course, I may be all wet!

OK, so what u guys reckon are good shift points on the R. I am thinking exit the bend at the 100kph mark in 3rd push thru to 6000rpm shift and hang on in 4th. What is max speed in 4th?

Re: (CyberRacer)

Just for some comparison when my car was still stock...
Round a hairpin turn exiting in 2nd gear at 70km/h then down a 927.543m straight shifting up to fourth, I could reach 185km/h max by 150m to go before hitting the brakes. This is at Sea Level. I wouldn't know what 1500m altitude would do to the car though, but with a 1.4km stretch, I think you can reach maybe 210km/h in 5th?
Good luck.. and have fun..

I could only get mine to 164 before running into traffic, here's a pic at 160.

Only about 200 meters above sea level, temp about 16 deg C, Aral 100RON.

Re: Going to take my R for a top end run ("R" Kelly)

Probably not too far from where R Kelly was having fun I was doing the same thing. Of course, my car only had about 500 miles on it at the time, so I limited myself to 140 MPH. Here I am closing in on 140 (about 225 KPH), as a VW Bora was dropping further and further behind!

I can't speak for R Kelly, but at 140 everything was as stable as could be. I was in Advanced Mode.
Brakes were great when coming up on slower traffic.

This is a $40K car (at times closer to $30K with rebates) that can do 140mph comfortably with power to spare. Our commutes in stop and go traffic don't do the car any justice.

Re: Going to take my R for a top end run (I Roll)

Kelly must be pretty busy but I was the one lucky enough to be taking the photo so I'll comment on what I felt from the passenger side:
1) How stable did the car feel?
AMAZING, it seemed totally planted. I was really surprised at how planted and smooth the car felt. Now this was on the Autobahn and the road was pretty smooth (not like a PA turnpike...) but still it felt planted and didn't scare me at all. Well maybe a little bit, but only because I wasn't in control.
2) Did it feel like the engine had much power left?
Can't tell for sure, but acceleration slowed quite a bit by that point. He could have kept going faster, but I'm not sure how much pedal was left.
3) What suspension mode were you in?
He had the 4C disabled so I have no idea what the car defaults to at that point. He did have aftermarket springs/sways.
4) Did the leather on the steering wheel corrode from all the sweat on your palms?
No he wasn't too tense.
He made several runs up to the 150-160 range, but we were catching other traffic so fast at that pace that it was hard to keep going.... slow down to pass... speed back up... slow down to pass... etc...

Re: Going to take my R for a top end run (I Roll)

Holy s***...just noticed the date stamp on Kelly's reply. Are done moving?
I thought I throw in my 2 cents
1) How stable did the car feel?
The car is very stable at top speed. I've done the cars top speed plenty of times and you can hardly tell that your there other the cabin air being sucked thru the moonroof.
2) Did it feel like the engine had much power left?
A little. It's hard enough passing thru the high 140's.
3) What suspension mode were you in?
Advance, but the road is sssoooo streched out at that speed that advance felt like comfort mode.
