going to do some fluid changes. Have ?s.

Going to do the transmission fluid change. Decided to do the Diff and bevel gear while I'm at it.

1. With diff and bevel gear, should I stick to the Volvo gear oils or are you guys/gals using and alternative? Maybe something that you can find locally?

2. For the rear diff change, did most you guys use a jack to lift the rear end or did you drive backwards onto a ramp.. And do I have to worry about front bumper clearance?

3. Is the bevel gear and the angle gear the same thing? If not move to question 4.

4. I have 50k on the car, should I change the angle gear fluid too? If so is there a DIY (prefer with pics) out there?

Awesome!
Thanks for reminding me, I need to change mine ASAP (65K miles).
Great links BTW.

So here's the parts list (sourced from above links), just for my own reference.

Fluids
6mt tranny: part #1161745 (75W-90 API GL-4 fully synthetic) capacity:2.3L
Equivalent- Redline MT-90
Angle gear: part #1161648 (API GL-5 BOT) capacity: .8L
Equivalent-?
Rear Diff: part #1161620 (API GL-5 Low friction) capacity: .7L
Equivalent-?
AOC: part #1161641 capacity: .8L

+ 5 aluminum washers (2 for tranny, 1 on angle gear, 1 rear diff, 1 AOC)

Special tools:
Oil pump
24mm socket (tranny fill plug)
Swivel w/ 6" extension (rear diff)

Anything else?
Any recommendation on aftermarket tranny/angle gear/rear diff fluids?

Thank You!

I wanted to know also, can we use, say royal purple products for GT fluid change? If so, anyone done that? Anyone sternly against it?

I Flushed My Fluids At 30k.
1. Rear Diff Was Dark and Had Sparkley Flakes In It. A Royal Pain In The Ass To Do By The Way!
2. The Haldex Fluid Was Dark, But Not Black. Not So Bad To Do.
3.The Bevel Gear Fluid Was Discolored. Drilled A Hole Thru The Hole For The Bottom Bolt. Drained and Refilled. Not Bad To Do.
4. I Flushed My 6 Spd GT Transmission At 17k and 30k. Dark Both Times.Used The Fatory Fluid The First Time But Then Used The BG Synthetic The Second Time. This Is A Pain To Do Due To No Dipstick. You Have To Remove The Air Box and Hook Up To Vida To Monitor Fluid Temp. Pull The Overflow Plug At 50-60c To Adjust To Proper Level.
5. Drain And Filled Coolant With The Volvo Blue Stuff and Distilled H2O.
6. Used A New Turkey Baster To Suck Dry The Power Steering Resv., Refilled With The Green Synthetic, Ran Car, Turned Lock To Lock and Repeated 5 Times.
7. Of Course Changed The Engine Oil For The 12th Time Since I Bought It AND For The First Time Did Not Have A Ball Of Fuzz On The Magnetic Drain Plug Since The Last RED LINE 10w-30 Fluid Change. All Prior Oil Changes Had Either Syntec or Mobile 1 EP.
8. Flushed The Brakes With ATE Super Blue Fluid. Gotta Keep With The Whole Blue Color Thang.
Sorry I Have Not Pics! http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif

I used various redline oils in my transmission, bevel, AOC, and rear diff.

I have always had good luck with redline and they are within the specifications for the oil weight that volvo calls for, just remember if it calls for GL-4 use GL-4 if you need GL-5 then use that. DO NOT mix the 2.

thanks,

-Colin

I'm no hippie, but that's a surprising lack of concern for an intelligent person. If not for you, then for the next generation. You could've at least recycled the fluids properly.

Off my soapbox now...

This is a great thread, since many of us are approaching full fluid swaps this spring/summer.

Did I Say I Didn't Recycle? It Was A Joke. The Longer I Keep My 4 Volvo's On The Road, The Better For Mother Earth, Right? And If I Keep The Best Possible Fuel In It? And If I Keep It Maintained A Best As Possible?
I Love My Volvo's Soo Much That I Maintain Them Better Than My Own Body.
