Re: Going Straight to the Factory??? (shawn)

The good part of your plan is that you're spending the night in Goteborg before your early AM ferry ride to Denmark. The bad part is that you're going to be a little tired from your plane ride when you pick up the car. I guess it's feasible though. The Volvo Taxi can take you to the factory with your luggage. You'll have to schedule an afternoon pick-up time at the fatory and will miss the free (and tasty) lunch. Hopefully you'll still get the factory tour though. Contact the factory and see what they can do. Let Volvo know that you have three kids so they can arrange a big enough taxi. It's not just your three kids, but their luggage. Also, if all goes according to plan, it will take about 1.5 hours to get to the factory from the airport. The factory is not very far (about 45- 50 minute drive) but you have to take into account the time it will take to get your luggage and get out of the airiport.
Our taxi was a V70, but I think they have XC90 taxis too. The taxis are not owned by Volvo- Volvo simply hires a taxi service for you. Still, the taxi drivers know the OSD routine.
If there's any way you can make flight arrangements and land a day sooner it would be a lot easier on you and the family- but it sounds like you've tried. It's great that you're bringing your kids. We brought our 6-year-old daughter with us last year and it's a trip she/we will never forget. Best time of my life.
Good luck!
06 S60R via OSD on Aug 15, 2005

Re: Going Straight to the Factory??? (shawn)

We went directly from the airport to the FDC both times we did it (Oct 03 and July 05). The only problem we had was that the connecting flight from Stockholm to Gothenburg had very little time in between flights. We had to run very quickly both trips. Not sure what your schedule is but with 3 kids (I have 4 but didn't bring them with but understand how challenging it is), I would make sure if you do miss your connecting flight to Gothenburg, you can get one later in the day and pick up the next day (don't arrive on a Friday cause the FDC isn't open on the weekends and you would have to wait until Monday).
Just my FYI.
Tom

Re: Going Straight to the Factory??? (shawn)

Hi Shawn, My husband and I, along with our 2 boys, ages 10 and 13, recently returned from our OSD trip. If you and the family can sleep on the flight, I wouldn't see a problem. We went right to the hotel to sleep for a couple of hours, and had delivery the next day. Yes, you would probably miss the lunch, unless you ask to do that and the tour and then actually take delivery. Much of this will depend on the ages of the kids, and after that long flight, they may need to expend some energy. We left from Dulles, and landed in Copenhagen and had a bit of a layover, and then arrived in Gothenburg at 10:05am, so they could run a bit in Copehagen if this is your itinerary also.
And as not2blu mentioned, do make sure you let FDC know how many people are travelling with you. I did this in our confirmation e-mail the week before we left, only to get a reply that they will send a taxi for 2 people, and had to e-mail them again to have them change it.
I am not sure what type of room you will have at the SAS, but in case you are using the sofa bed, it is not your typical one that folds out from the top. it is more like a trundle bed. It took us a while to figure it out. But we managed.
I'm sure you will have a great time
This is a great forum to see pictures of others trips as well.
Good luck !!

Re: Going Straight to the Factory??? (shawn)
Thank you everybody.
I am taking the Dulles to Copenhagen to Gothenberg flight. It seems that the first flight is 8 hours and the second flight is an hour. My wife and I are worried about the 8 hour flight with our three children ages 8, 5 and 18 months. Our longest flight with the old two older ones was 3 hours and the baby was just an hour.
I had the choice of a 45 minute layover or a two hour layover. Just wanting to get there ASAP, I wanted the short layover. Marge at Volvo Travel was worried about about missing the connecting flight if the gates were far apart. My wife thought about having the kids stretch their legs for a while in the airport between the flights.
So worst case is that I miss a third of the factory time and the possibility of adding some options. But I add some safety factor and a happy wife.
Should things go poorly on the flight, we are hoping my wife and the kids who want to go to the hotel can do so, while I take delivery with those who are still interested.
Re: Going Straight to the Factory??? (shawn)

Shawn, 45 minutes in Copenhagen is very tight since you have to go through Customs before you board any flight within Europe. The nice thing is that you only have to go through Customs once.
However, when you get off that Airbus A330, haul some a$$ to get to Customs.
It does go pretty fast since all they usually do is look at your passport, but remember that plane will have about 250 people on it (plus whatever other planes will be there - Kastrup is a busy international airport). It is about a 5 minute walk from where the international gates are to Customs, and then you'll probably need to walk another 5 minutes to get to what is likely a Q400 (a turbo prop plane) to Goteborg (which is a really quick flight...up then down!).
I'll be going through Kastrup myself next week on my way home to Norway, and I usually leave myself at least an hour for connecting flights
Enjoy your OSD. It is a lot of fun. Don't forget to look for your name on the TV screen when you get to the factory!!
