Getting Ready for the Track, 2005

This is a replay of several other old threads, but with more pople now experienced over 2004 and more getting ready for 2005, I thought I would try this again....

Although the R is not an ideal track car, there's a few things that can be done to improve it.

Ther are also things you need to bring to be ready for a weekend of track use.

So in preparation for Watkins Glen... here goes...

On my own 2004 V70R I'll have the following done...

- 60 compound tires for track on 17" Pegs (Pirelli Pzero Corsa)
- better brake pads, new rotors
- 6-pt harnesses
- remove rear plywood decks, spare etc.
- BSR/PPC
- BMC filter
- revised airbox
- additional PS cooler
- remove front license plate
- OMP pedals
- revised shift knob
- redline LED

A little biased are we

I'll bet my IPD wagon is quicker than your BSR
(Probably couldn't tell the difference though unless we were on a 1 mile straightaway)

Re: Getting Ready for the Track, 2005 (JRL)

I didn't sneak that BSR in..... had that for a year.... often mentioned in my airbox thread.

additions/amendments:

Car = SS brakes lines

Me:

- SA2000 rated helmet
- driving gloves
- driving boots

The gloves and boots are not req'd but I need them for other driving stuff I have in the future so getting to know them...

Have you thought about alignment settings that are more track-friendly? Your front tires might be happier with more camber.

I would also consider a real oil pressure gage or warning light.

Next question, what weight oil to run?

Just use the factory recommended 0W-30 (SLX R-Tec) or 5W-40 (TXT Softec)

10W is not suitable for the newer R engine's and their oil operated variable valve mechanism.

But since you are flooring it all the time this isn't your concern. What is is the oil level/quality sensor. When using the wrong oil under lots of load a message might come up warning about the oil level but basically the sensor senses conterminated oil. This is also why Volvo recommends the Castrol oil only because it has been tested with the sensor.

Jim,

As you work your way toward the limits of the car, somewhere around the 70% level and above will DEMAND track pads. The stock pads will be easily destroyed by honest "Brembo-level" heavy braking.

Anyone got recommendations on track/performance street pads to fit the R? Ones that won't destroy my rotors?

Hawk, Ferodo, Mintex, Porterfield etc.??

I know there's many old threads on pads but I'm hoping people with more recent track time can share some personal experience.

Thanks Jim!

Any concerns or accomodation for the front dampers that were installed? What about shims/compound?

Depending on driver level the stock pads come a very long way when using 18" rims.
With 17" they will run hotter.
