I took a bad hit from a rock today, and need new glass. Should I go to the dealer or a glass shop? Insurance is picking up the bill, so the difference in price is not a factor. I'm worried about a couple of things though. The first is rain sensing wipers, and the second is the gap between the glass and the panels that our cars have. I'm not sure how common this is, or if it's an issue at all.<p>Where would you go to get it done?

Re: Getting my windshield replaced.... (mofolicious)

I've had two replacement winshields and at least a dozen chip repairs all done at an independent window shop with no issues what so ever. Make sure they order the correct windshield for the rain sensor. Very few dealers actually replace the glass themselves, they use a window contractor and add to the cost.

had my windshield replaced recently (because of a rock hit on the autobahn) ... cost me about 450 euros ($630) - and I had it done by an independent window shop... no issues, they also added a 5% tint strip at the top - everything went well.

Re: (crossie)

Do you have rain sensing wipers?<p>(I don't even know how these work)<p>This is going to either cost me $50 or $0. I can't remember which deductible I opted for for glass.

I don't have rain sensing wipers... but I think there is a little sensor at the back of the rearview mirror... at least thats what I remember the glass guy told me.<p>and no issues with the seal. no squeaking, no rattling while driving - everything o.k.

No issues with the seal for me either. A reputable glass shop will have the proper sealant and will also keep the car in a controled environment until the sealant has set up properly.

Ordered a new one today. The guy looked at the price and his eyes widened, he did a double take and kind of reeled back from his screen a bit, then said "you've got glass insurance, right?"<p>

I'm going through hell. He said something about $800. Whether that was before or after tax, and whether or not he was rounding up or down I don't know, because at the time I didn't care.<p>I can't find my policy anywhere, so I called my insurer and they informed me that I opted out of glass coverage. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why I would do that, since I've always thought I had it, and have even used it on an old car.<p>So now I have to go and see an adjuster and try and convince him to allow me to use my collision insurance, which will hopefully result in a $100 deductible. The fate of ~$700 of my dollars lies in the hands of a possibly embittered government worker. I hope they're having a good day that day, and I can brown nose effectively. Damn.
