I am picking my car up from Service today.
The day I dropped it for the 7,500 mile maintenance, I called and asked about programming personal codes (two, specifically). They said it would cost me $45 a pop, which I thought was a bargain based on what I've read on here. However, also based on my SwedeSpeed experience, I asked if the upgrades were free up to 7, 500 miles. They told me they were not. I then said I wasn't interested.
Today, they called me to go pick up the car and they tell me the codes were programmed. They also said they were only going to charge me for an hour. Turns out the $45 was only the part charge (the code is a part) and it didn't include labor. I told them I never agreed to programming the codes, which I honestly did not. They said they would not charge me for the parts and only for one hour of labor (supposedly, the norm is one hour per code), so it would be $99. I insisted that I never gave the go-ahead, so they finally said to go pick up the car and I wouldn't be charged.
Now I feel bad, even though this is not my fault. Wrong?

Re: Getting free personal codes -- Should I feel bad or lucky? (Razor1973)

Unfortunately, they're only free for 2006 models. Why? I have no idea.
Regardless, if ANYONE ever does ANY work on your vehicle that you do not authorize, it most certainly should be done for free . . . and you shouldn't feel bad about getting it for free either.

Thanks for the moral support. And to think you work for Volvo!
Oh, I think the main reason these codes are free for the MY 06 is because Volvo felt like giving something back after taking away the free maintenance. My 2c.

Nah, it's their fault for doing it.
Why such a ridiculous charge for a 5 minute procedure anyway? How hard can it be to do a software download?

Ridiculous charges for labor is another story.

For Christ's sake, to charge for adjusting the heat setting on the seats is beyond cheap. I think dealers that are charging $100+ for something like do not vaule their clients well.
What next, charge by the pound for how much air they put in the tires??!!
