Re: geartronic transmission fluid (wclark)

Mobil ATF-3309 is the branded name and can be purchased by most Mobil Distributors. Should cost somewhere in the range of $5.00 / qt.

There is a difference and I have validated it.

DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT use anything but synthetic oil. The tranny oil is indeed expensive so don't cheap out on it or you will jeopardize your car's future.
In Canada the RIGHT oil is about $16-18 per liter and you need 16 liters (about) for a full flush and clean.
Have it done at your volvo dealer and pay the price.

Re: geartronic transmission fluid (Cornfed)

Just got off the phone with Mobil. They stated that the ATF 3309 is a CONVENTIONAL fluid. Case closed. Call them yourself 1-800-662-4525. I also sent an email requesting the same info, when I receive a reply, I will post it. This is the right fluid, it IS NOT A SYNTHETIC!!!!

Re: geartronic transmission fluid (JRL)

OK, I have done some research on it due to all the disagreements. I am including a few links as well.
If you call:
Exxon Mobil Corporation
3225 Gallows Road
Fairfax, VA 22037
1-800-Mobil25 (662-4525)

Choose technical support and then ask them about Volvo P/N 116 1540-8. They will tell you that it is in fact Mobil 3309 that has a Volvo label on it. They also looked up the data on the makeup of that oil and confirmed it is a mineral based oil.
http://www.mobil.com/USA-Engli...9.asp
If you go here:
http://www.host1.exxonmobil.com/psims/psims.aspx
Type in 3309 and choose US and that will take you to the MSDS sheets for that oil.
So, unless Mobil employees are lying about their oil for some unknown reason, 3309 IS the same as the volvo oil AND it is a mineral based oil. BTW he didn't just give me an answer off the cuff, he went and looked it up.
Re: (mtaviator)

I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if someone can confirm that Volvo ATF is re-branded of Mobil 3309. Like I said, 2 Volvo dealers have told me that Volvo ATF for transmission AW55-50 requires synthetic ATF, but Mobil 3309 is not synthetic. What’s going on?

To say that someone at a dealership said that it's synthetic, does NOT convince me. Dealerships are in the business of selling cars, and selling parts. If I only had a buck for every time I was fed bullxxxx at a dealer. They may not have known and wanted to make you think that you couldn't live without their "special" fluid.

No, It is re-branded Mobil 3309.
If you do a search on Aisin Warner AW50 Transmissions, all of the specs point to the JWS3309 Fluid as the correct fluid to use. Mobil 3309 fluid meets that specification. Synthetic or not, Mobil 3309 fluid is the correct fluid.

Just to throw a little more dirt on the coffin, I called Aisin-Warner of America, and talked to a Tech guy there. Mobil 3309 is the fluid they spec, and various auto manufacturers re-package it to show their label (Toyota-IV, etc). Well, now we KNOW, 3309 is the right fluid.

Re: (mtaviator)

No question Mobil 3309 is the exact same as the Volvo Dealers fluid.
Quote, originally posted by blackTT55 » Whatever.. I don't want to waste my breath on this anymore.
There's 2 types of tranny on the early S60 models. One is a 4 speed auto (I think it's AW 50-40 but not certain) and the other is the AW 55-50 which my cars has. The 4 speed auto tranny does not require the synthetic ATF but AW 55-50 does. End of story. You don't have to take our word for it, just go the the dealer and find out for yourself.

quote, originally posted by FredMc
Again, misinformation.
The S60's have a 5 speed trans not 4 speed(
Couldn't care less for the 2 people on here that "suspect" the Volvo fluid is synthetic because a Dealer said so. That's the fox running the hen house.
It's misinformation consistent with one member in particular who doesn't know cars from a cart...
