I have the geartronic trans on my T5 and am presently thinking about perfomance mods. How does the geartronic do compared to manual in the modding respect? Is the a limit to the hp, torgue, or options i have?
you can mod it just like a 5 spd. not sure if your geartronic has the torque limiters. assuming it does, there are ECU tuners that offer to remove such limiters.
you can check BSR, IPD, Evolve, etc.
i would do a search on here..im sure someone has reported their findings.
hey. i also have a 01 S60 T5 geartronic.
i've done a 15psi superchip and replaced the cat. not much. supposed to be pushing around 280 bhp / 300 lbs/ft ... no problems whatsoever. very comfortable with the extra power. i'm sure it can take more. and i've heard a number of people quite comfortable with 310bhp / 330 lbs/ft S60T5 geartronics over the forums especially in the UK.
but as to the road performance, i must say i wish i bought a manual. our cars are less than half the fun compared to a manual T5. in the first 2 gears the geartronic has a torque limiter in order to protect the tranny and avoid tyre spin (which it really can't). so i kind of only like 3rd,4th and 5th gears in this car. there are ecu upgrades eliminating this torque limiter and thus give full power right from the start but i believe they do risk ruining your tranny with the excessive torque in the low end.
i believe this engine can easily be tuned to a healthy 350-360 bhp if you choose to go so far as to swap your 16T turbo with a 19T, remap your ecu, drop in a 3" exhaust and dp and so on... then you'll easily be putting something like 290-300 hp to the wheels.
however i find it risky to push a geartronic that far.
with the stock turbo, " volvos60t5x " might give you a much better idea of what can be done with this engine - but keep in mind that his car is a manual.
good luck

The ECU that iPD sells (level 2) gets rid of the torque limiting so you have full power in all gears, but you have to be careful because you can blow your tranny. I dont think its all that much of a concern though unless you like to do brake stands, which in that case you shouldn't be driving a Volvo anyway
