Today while accelerating aggressively between 2nd and 3rd gear (in advanced mode with DSTC engaged) my geartronic transmission came out of gear. The engine spooled up to redline and I simultaneously heard a loud thump beneath the transmission well. After releasing the throttle I gingerly re-applied throttle and the transmission re-engaged, apparently no worse for the experience. Prior to dumping the tranny into neutral I had aggressively accelerated into a 90 degree acceleration turn lane while ascending up a 15 percent grade. My question is has anyone had a similar experience, and what likely caused the tranny to drop out of gear? Does the torque limiter disengage the drivetrain in this manner when reaching the torque limit? Or is it some other nefarious thing at work? BTW, the car is new with about 1200 miles.

Re: Geartronic Slipped Out of Gear (Zinski)

Funny you should mention this. I too was accelerating hard into a sweeping left turn where I then had to get on the brakes to a complete stop. I was in "manual" mode and took the turn in second. When I tried to accelerate from the stop, all I heard was the engine rev but no thump. I looked down and the gear stated "1" in the dim. I let the tach go back to idle and lightly accelerated. The car seem to return to normal. I went from manual to auto back to manual mode and the car seemed to handle fine. I don't know what to think except the worse. Now I listen to the engine and transmission ever so more intently. I have just over 11,000 miles. I too am very curious if anyone has had similar experiences.

Re: Geartronic Slipped Out of Gear (ACowabunga)

I have something very similar that happens to me repeatedly. There's one turn in particular that I take almost every day, sharp 90 degree turn, then downhill. Whenever I take this turn agressively, braking into the turn, then accelerating, there's a loud bang from the transmission, then the engine races as though in neutral. When I let off the gas and the RPM's drop, there's another bang as the transmission kicks in again. It's pretty scary the first time. It sounds and feels like you definately just broke something.
Just my opinion but from time to time this car seems to get into situations where it just doesn't know what the hell is going on and freaks out for a second or two. There are lots of things being sensed, calculated and decided and occasionally it seems like you can get the car into an "out of range" condition, then strange things happen. Fortunately, the car always recovers quickly and away it goes.
I mentioned this to Volvo every time it happens between services and they can never find anything wrong, and no codes. It would be really interesting to know more about how this car thinks. Maybe someday someone at Volvo will write a tell all book. I always imagine the engineers at Volvo reading post like this and saying to themselves "oh yea, that will do that if this and that happens in this sequence, etc. . . because we programmed this to do that and then this will happen, etc. . ." it probably all makes perfect sense to them.
I wonder how many of us have had experiences where the car does something strange or unexplainable for whatever reason and then just recovers. It would be neat to know why.
04 GLT S60R IPD Springs / Rear Sway

Re: Geartronic Slipped Out of Gear (TexasV70R)

Funny or strange, same story happened to me.
Driving out of a right turn in second "manual" gear, the engine suddenly revved up for a sec then the 3rd gear went in with a loud thump. Everything works smooth since then, but I do not feel well when I do 2 to 3rd.
Texas V70R could you e-mail me the doc you mention so I can go to Volvo ?

TNN 43-27 does not apply to 6 speed auto. never the less have dealer check for tcm upgrade. Also check trans fluid level and if problem persists have dealer get tech line involved.

Re: Geartronic Slipped Out of Gear (Zinski)

I am really surprised that this happens with the 6-speed also!
The 2-3 flare is very common in the old 5-speed, and there are various reasons and various fixes from software to B4 valve cover to valve body change. (Search the forums and archives for shift flare)
Sounds like Volvo is not able to write good software for Aisin-Warner trannies, that would work in all dynamic situations. Or they have 45 year old housewives test driving. (one ticket to hell please.)

Re: (TexasV70R)

Guys, this is a little confusing.
There are multiple posts from several members, more than one of which has the 6spd GT, and more than one that has the 5spd.
The TNN's posted are for the 5spd. I have not heard of a TNN for the 6 speed, but they could be out there.
I have had the shift flare since I bought my car, on upshifts and downshifts. The new software fixed the upshift flare, but not the downshift flare.
The flare is a slight slipping between gears, a couple of hundred RPM. It is relatively smooth and annoying, but if your passenger wasn't paying attention they wouldn't notice. It does NOT involve any banging, thumping or racing for the redline.
If your car is doing this, it is really slipping out of gear, which is NO good. Take the car in..it's not a flare issue.

Re: (T5atl)

Well, Texas V70R was right....there is a TNN for the new 6spd transmission. He posted it, but cut out the part for the 6 spd.
Here it is.
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Vol....html
