So I have an '05 V70R GT, and one minor annoyance is that the light in the S-button on the transmission is dead. The local dealership confirmed that it was just the light, and that everything else works - and quoted me $400 to fix it (because apparently their fix is to replace the whole panel containing the button.)
So, 2 questions...
Given that I can't tell just by looking that the "S-mode" is on or off, how does this button operate - in particular how does it interact with changes in the 4-C mode? If I switch it on in "sport" and change to "comfort" should I expect it to stay on or off etc?
Secondly, has anyone had any experience attempting to just replace the light? My suspicion is that this is a $1 part that has failed, and spending $400 to fix it seems like overkill.
Thanks in advance

This sport mode is automatically turned on when "Advanced" is chosen on the 4C.

For $400 I would at least pull it apart and see if I could get to the light source myself. Most likely it's a soldered in LED. If you know how to solder then finding a replacement LED is the easy part.

The only difference between Sport + Sport and Sport + Advanced is a bumpier ride.

You can cycle through every single 4C setting until the pigs come home, but those three things above will be set to "S" until you either turn it back off, or you switch the car off and on, then it defaults to "S off".
Easy to tell when it's on, give a measured stab of your foot while in a fixed gear (geartronic active) and see what the car does. Press the button and give your foot the same motion, it should feel like you gained a bunch of power or lost it. If it doesn't , try putting it in advanced and see if there is a difference (aside from ride). It should be noticeable.
Also, it's not overly hard to get to the plate under the shifter, but I honestly don't remember the configuration of the circuit board. I am sure that it's one integrated unit. I will look again soon when I switch my shift knob out.

I remember seeing a thread awhile back about a few people who did a complete swap of all lights in the car to change the color. If you can find that thread I bet it will show how to replace this light

In layman's terms for shifting points (something I find the most noticeable about the 'S' setting), the 'S' button keeps the revs higher in most gears so you have instant access to more torque and horsepower without having to wait for the engine to rev up. If you're driving, say at 50mph with the 'S' engaged, the needle will stay a bit above 2k RPM, turn the 'S' off, and it will sink down to barely over 1k RPM if you're cruising.
When you step on it, it will also allow the needle to get closer to the redline before switching gears depending on how hard you hit the gas.
And it is staggering that they would charge $400 for an LED fix (even if it IS a whole panel--still overkill). I'm sure there are ways around it.

Re: Geartronic "S-button" questions... (biketrouble)

after reading this post i actually used the "S" button for the first time the other day. definitely enhanced the driving experience in full automatic. of course, this is a Volvo, which means:
More driving pleasure = More maintenance and repair costs
i think Volvo should have called it the "$" button.
the other day someone asked me why i take the bus to work 2 days a week. i replied, "I own a Volvo, so I try to drive it as little as possible." all i got was a blank stare. clearly not a Volvo owner.
