Apparently it’s possible. My wife asked me to fill up her MY16 XC90. I meant to turn it off but turned the knob the wrong way not realising it was still running. I figured when I got back in that I would have an engine light. No dice.

Not something I would normally do. Have you made the mistake?

It’s things like this that make me uneasy about hydrogen fuel for cars. * shakes head*

Did the auto start-stop shut off the engine?
Possibly.

It occurred to me that something was off since the lights were still on while filling up. I don’t drive hers very often.

I have a MY19 XC60 and usually have the dimmer running lights on instead of the daytimes. Anyway, the knob is turned clockwise for both on and off. It was a habitual mistake. I even purposely took the keys with me. The wtf moment came after paying.

This is definitely not a best practice.

Please don’t do it.

Of course it isn’t. I don’t know anyone that does nor would I recommend it.

You can't damage anything by filling up with the engine running. If the car happens to run an evap system leak test while you are filling up, you'll get a check engine light. You're fine.
