Recently switched to a Synthetic Blend (serviced by Volvo dealer) and have noticed that my gas mileage has dropped by 2 miles per gallon. I was getting 23-24 and am not getting 21-22 for my 2.4T. Have not changed gas, tire pressure, air filter, and it has not been colder etc. Could it be related to the oil?

Synthetic blends are a TOTAL waste of money, IMO.
Yannis

Uh, Yannis, don't forget the synthetic blend is what Volvo uses as the factory fill. . . . . .

quote:
Uh, Yannis, don't forget the synthetic blend is what Volvo uses as the factory fill. . . . . .

I have seen this comment before (from you and others) and it is not true. What Volvo is using as a factory fill is a special BLEND (not synthetic) that is thinner and much lighter, in order to facilitate the "break-in" of the new engine (although, officially, there is no such thing)...That's why we have a communique to encourage customers to bring in their cars at 3,750 miles for a courtesy oil and filter change.
Even if it were a synthetic blend that does not mean that it would be wise to spend the extra bucks, for the life of the car, in order to get the extra "protection" of a synthetic blend. As an initial fill it could be just better than a regular dyno oil...I am sure that a synthetic blend is BETTER than a dyno oil but not for that much more $$$.
Yannis

Mine has an official looking yellow sticker under the hood that says "huile synthetique" (Canadian car). That suggests to me the factory fill was synthetic. No?

Shell full synthetic 5W40 is used by my dealer and 0W40 for the refill.
3750 oil change is bull also
Just use a refill for the first miles oil usage.
The filter can clean 7500 miles easy but there's a lot of debree in the engine, oil can last for 15K miles without problems.
But it is bull suggesting to keep the oil unchanged for 15K miles... But I do appreciate the feedback!
Yannis

quote:
Shell full synthetic 5W40 is used by my dealer and 0W40 for the refill.

Johan:
I used to think that the greatest spread between the small and the big number was the best oil. Then I learned that to get a big spread required additional additives to the oil. No problem, I thought because how much difference could a few spoonfulls od additives make?
Then I learned that it is a whole lot of additives! And they are not oil, and replace part of the oil. You get less real oil in the bottle!
Now I believe in the lowest spread, 20 points is ideal, such as 10W-30. But I do use 5W30 in the S60T in the winter in order to gain cold starting protection.
-- Rich
