Gas Mileage getting better with age???

3605 Views 33 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  MrTippy
Greetings,

Just did a 400 mile round trip this weekend and noticed the V70R said 26.8 MPG avg
I always drive about 80 mph on the freeway, so it isn't like I am going 60 to get the mileage up there.
I just find it odd, that as time has gone by, my R continues to get better and better freeway mileage. When it was new it was 22-23 mpg on avg. Now I routinely get over 25 mpg.
I saw a new V70xc and the freeway mileage on that was listed at 23 mpg. Made me love my R that much more.

Your R is a cougar, the older the better!
at 65k i did a 500mile trip each way and with bike rack and doing 72mph i got 26.4mpg and on the way back without bikes I got 31.9mpg also at 72mph
This is pretty common. Car and Driver do long term tests of a bunch of cars, and after 15k they ALWAYS get better mpg, more hp, and a better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.
Re: Gas Mileage getting better with age??? (surfsd)

I just got back from a trip to Burlington/Montreal last week with my 04 V70R, that now has 48,500 miles on the clock. I filled up in town here and when I went to drive the car again, my trip computer said 520 miles till empty. Overall, I averaged about 27.6 mpg on the trip and that was at 75+ mph on the interstates. It does seem to get better mileage with age (and Mobil 1).
IDK where you guys fill up but Shell gets me 3-4mpg more. Whenever I fill up anywhere else (BP, Mobil) I cant go over 20mpg in city, VS Shell I get 22-25

Is the Shell a non-ethanol blend, and the others all E10?

Exactly the same for me.

I think only V power has no ethanol

I hope so because my '06VR with 10K on is terrible on gas. I barely get 220 miles to a tank at 13.3 mpg. This car is terrible on gas in stop and go around town traffic. I have had much better numbers on the highway but nothing like you guys posted. Hopefully, it still needs to get broken in.

I've noticed much better product from Shell as well. I'll pay the extra few cents to get more per gallon, thus saving $ in some situations.

I know the ECU likes to adjust to various things...does that factor into this at all?
Re: (m3nt0s)

shell vpower has no ethanol, ethanol burns faster then gasoline and I guess ECU figures out that shell vpower provides longer bang on lower amount of fuel

false

ethonal is used as a octane boost, thus slowing the burn and timing. Ethonal has about half the energy of gasoline.

V-power has about 5.7 - 10 percent ethonal. Thus calling it E10. It would be silly to deny it since shell uses no less than 5.7 percent in any of it's fuels.

adding: here is the missing link you guys need to catch up on. It's the reason why shell is better. It's Shells Friction Modification Technoligy (FMT)

I heard Shell bought some magnets off ebay and put these magnets on their pumps.
Personally I prefer Chevron. Call me crazy, but it seem the additives that Chevron uses (as opposed to Shell) works best in my R. Price is usually the same here in Seattle between 92 Shell or 92 Chevron.

I do get better mileage than when new, but a lot of that has to do with the IPD ECU. I average about 27-29 on the highway going about 70-80 MPH.
Re:

I have to agree about Chevron when I'm not pump 100 octane.

Doesn't the question arise that the reason gas mileage gets better with age is because you are not being as lead footed as you were when you first picked up the car.... hmmm

This is the same for me....living in the city with stop and go, you will not obtain good gas mileage like the others with pure highway driving.
