Gallons of water held by door

I've seen this more than a few time but never captured it until today. It rained very hard on Sat and I had my car parked outside all day long. Today is Monday and my hope was to capture how much water was held by one of the rear doors (right). I have seen this only at this particular door.

This does not happen often so I have not done much investigation but it would appear that the water is held between two gaskets - one on the door and the other on the body. You see the water keeps coming down from the bottom of the door and it is from the gasket itself.

I have an appointment at my dealer next week. Hope they can figure this out.

Have anyone been having the same issue??

Most likely a outer window scraper seal not positioned correctly and letting excess rainwater down the glass into the door. I have seen this complaint before. Usually just a few drops and at least it doesn't get into the interior. But implying this is multiple gallons is misleading. Maybe a Cup of water.

Hahaha! Yes you are right. It is about a few glasses of water but I’d never seen something like this before. Thanks for the tip. I will check out the scraper tomorrow morning.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I checked the outer scraper on the window and I didn't see any notable difference among all the windows. Also checked the gasket on the door and body and they were all installed consistently. I believe that the water gets in from somewhere and held by the two gasket at the bottom.

There is what seems to be a "drain notch" at the bottom of the doors and the one on the rear right door is offset. Maybe it's not working as it should.

I will let my dealer investigate the issue as I have enough issues to troubleshoot at work lol

Finally visited my dealer and they found that the drain holes at the bottom of the door were mostly clogged. They cleared the holes. Hopefully no more gallons of water coming out when I open the door..

That's amazing! A 2020 and it's doing that now??
Glad they cleared it up early. They didn't do any drilling, did they?

It is supposed to rain tomorrow if not, I may wash my car so I will report back. My feeling kind of agree with you.

You said "more cars have it". Where did you hear this problem with VOLVOs?

Kick me out if I am messing up your thread OP. Ok that out of the way do y'all find that the doors seem to hold on to water? I don't have any drain blockage like that, but after a rain or washing the car, and for quite a while after like a whole day sometimes, if I put a window down, it comes up wet, of course that causes some water spots which pisses me off ha.

I've had many cars over the years and some just seem to seal the door really well and the scraper seal works well the "squeegee" off the window as it rolls. That's usually the japanese cars. And others, do as the Volvo does, dampen the windows long after the outside of the car is dry. That's usually my American cars that did that. I don't figure this is something the dealer would address and probably just a design thing since all the windows do it. Just curious if others see that.

I have that same wet window thing with my Volvo and have had it with my previous cars. Not big of a deal to me.

Wow! This is an old thread! I’m glad I came to this forum and found this thread!
nope, I still have the same Issue and yes I have the problem only with the right rear door. The other day, I doscovered a potential water entry point - the door locking assembly. Every time I see a gallon of water coming out when I open the right rear door, I see the water running down from the metal loop that the bear claw grabs. Let me see if I can upload a photo to showing that.

an oil change is coming up soon so I’ll bring that up to the service dept at my dealer. And I have the vibration issue under braking as well

Came back from my 3K service. I asked the service dept to look into this issue again. I showed the SA the video and this and the other thread about the water. the outcome was disappointing again. The SA said (again) that the water would come through the drain holes at the bottom of the door and accumulate the space between the door and frame. Gee, it does not make sense at all. There was a V60CC in their showroom, so I opened the rear passenger‘s door and explained why it was not possible for the water to go UP from the holes into the space where I see the water accumulation bypassing another weather strip. He kind of understood my “logic” but said “well we cannot really explain how it happens. Please monitor and report back in 10K”.

Basically they do not want to get into troubleshooting which requires disassembling the door ass’y and more. @risrael has a good point. It could be something unique to that location.

Another thing that I have noticed is that just leaving the car in rain does not ”collect“ water much. Very little. BUT when I drive in the rain, the amount of water increases.

At this point, I will write a letter to Volvo USA and let them know the issue and these threads. Hopefully they would step up and look into it.

In the meantime, I will open the door and drain water after driving in rain. That should be added to the owner’s manual, no? lol

My XC90 is a 2016, and I have been dealing with this issue for quite a while. It always occurs only on the rear passenger door on the driver's side. After a rain, the water accumulates at the bottom of the door opening - a cup or two of liquid - and remains there indefinitely until the door is opened. The passenger that opens that door a day or a week later will get a shoe or two full of water. The floorboard stays completely dry, and there seems to be no liquid actually penetrating the door itself. My impression is that the rainwater is being diverted by the door gaskets around the door and to the the bottom of the door opening as it should, but once the water makes it to the bottom opening where the step plate is it has no where to go. It is a complete mystery as it only happens on this door and I can spot no differences between it and the other doors. I don't believe it's a door issue but instead an issue involving the door opening (then again I could be completely wrong). The dealer has "fixed" this twice, but it has never been resolved. Edit: This mostly happens when parked in the rain. My driveway is on a moderate incline with the front of the vehicle elevated.

so I recently faced the same issue for the first time with my 2017 XC90 rear right door only holding lot of water as my car was parked for 40 days straight throughout many rain showers

what is worse that due to prolonged parking water stuck in rear door my car Interiors were filled with fungus mould through out And when I started the car I got three errors mainly Driver support functionality reduced… suspension failure and thirdly headlamp assembly malfunction…. I’m currently in a place far away from next available volvo dealer and when I called them about the issue they told me that drainage system from the roof has some block that’s why water is stuck at the door. Secondly mould they feel is from stuck water and they also suspect that mould and moisture has affected module sensors.
They told me to open the car and leave it in the hot sun all day with windows down. Or else they will have to open module boxes underneath front and third row seat and manually dry the module for errors to go away.
I’m also shocked by this water retention problem which is experienced by so many people and yet no one seems to have a clear fix and first time I have ever experienced this In a Volvo.
Audi Q7 had once similar drainage issue of water from roof but that lead to water leaking inside the driver side front A pillar near top of windshield meets pillar area

this one is completely different

This has just started on the right rear door of my XC90, but I don't believe the issue existed since the car was new. It seems to have started after my car was hit on the side and both doors were replaced. Have you seen TJ 31542.1.3? It mentions the window "scraper" seal as mentioned earlier, as well as a foam piece inside the door under the quarter glass that could be installed incorrectly. I think one of these might be my issue as there is a noticeable larger gap in the scraper seal on the right side vs the left. It also is very possible the body shop did not reinstall the foam piece correctly (or at all). Finally, I noticed yesterday that there is a hole in the top outer corner of the door which is loosely covered by flap on the end of the door seal. On this door, the flap was pushed inside the whole which would have allowed excess water in. I pulled the flap out and reseated it correctly, but it has not rained yet to test. Oh, and one more thing, I notice that the water only accumulates when I am parked in my parking space face in, which is a slight incline. If I back in so the car is facing down hill, or park elsewhere that is level, there is no water when I open the door.

Thanks very much for the TJ! Promising! I’ll present its number to my dealer when I goes in next time. I wonder though why people have been reporting this issue only at Rear Right Door.

not statistically or scientifically, but my observation says that I get a significant water accumulation on,y when I drive in rain. I’ve not noticed the same when my car was just sitting in rain.

Update: my dealer finally showed great interest and spent 2 hours on this issue. Firstly they performed the rework per the TJ and did a rain test with a garden hose. still leaked. They removed the door panel inside and “determined” that the leak was caused by the rubber boot for the door latch not being efficient to block the water. That is aligned with my observation of water running down from the catch loop of the door latch. They ordered a replacement rubber boot. Will report back later
