Good pricing on those kits too, seems very reasonable considering what you get out of it. I wonder what some of these cars run in the 1/4 mile?

Re: GADZOOKS!!! (Spearzy)

I just recently interviewed Mr. Converse on a feature article I'm working on. Hey did three turn key conversions on then brand new 960 wagons, one for Paul Newman, one for Letterman and one for a businessman in NYC. The third is owned and up for sale I think, by a guy in Reading, PA. It's a 5.0 with 5spd manual tranny and a Kenny Bell supercharger. It was silly. I got a ride in it.
That same guy is building a 240 V8 and a Monster Miata.

Dude, I saw the ultimate 140 at my last VCOA chapter meeting in NC. I didn't get to talk to the guy much, since I was saying goodbye to everybody, but he had a Ford 302 V8 in his 142! Fiberglass flared fenders, lowered, and a pure race cockpit, and a nice '5.0' badge on the rear. The thing was awesome. I wish I could give you more info, but I just don't have it right now.
If my B23 ever dies, I'd have to think long and hard about a late model Chevy 350 from an SS Camaro or Trans Am.

Re: GADZOOKS!!! (Spearzy)

I've got one! Found a blown up GLE 16-V on ebay and a good running but UGLY T-Bird and with a whiff of the big red hammer-done!
If you've monkeyed much with engines, it's really not too tough. And Ford's 5.0 is thoughtfully designed with a stand-alone EFI system so it's almost plug and play.
Finished it a couple of months ago. Been testing my Continentals "accelerated wear characteristics" ever since.
Makes for great fun terrorizing the younger set with their coffee can resonator adorned Civics. I even scored a turbodiesel emblem at the bone yard to confuse folks a little more.
The more sensible side is, um, I forget. But, it runs like a stock 5.0, everything works and I've been averaging ~19 mpg! (Not bad with a 4.11 rear)
Now I need to do the springs/swaybar bit so it doesn't handle so much like a milk truck...

Re: GADZOOKS!!! (Caveman)

That's awesome! Welcome Ed. We're planning on going up to Westchester (many of us from DC) on Oct. 27 and I'm working on getting a 5.0 supercharged 960 there. I've also got to call Ross Converse back, as he's planning on swinging through PA in the next couple of weeks to deliver a car to Michigan. If the timing is right, that'd be cool as crap if he could stop down. I think the car he built is a 740 also.

Yeah, I saw that meet. I'm in DC for business on the 29-31. And I've got a buddy in Philly that's been bugging me to drive it up. If I can arrange a Monday off (which isn't getting good response from the boss) I'll try to swing by.

Cool, hopefully we'll see you. If not, we have impromptu DC get togethers once in a while as well. I'd love to see the beast.

Yes the ultimate sleeper
Mine is a 1989 740 Turbo with a dyno'ed 350HP Ford 302, Ford racing close ratio 5 speed, lowered, Bilsteins, and much more.
Nothing can compare with driving a V8 Volvo, and such satisfaction blowing the doors off of most challengers

Wow, that sounds incredible. Did you build it?
Out of curiousity...how's your fuel economy?

28ish isn't hateful. 12, that's worse than a V8 Grand Cherokee I owned, but 28ish isn't bad. What would you say your average is?

Re: GADZOOKS!!! ([email protected])

I can't say I built car this with fuel economy as a goal. But I can sure say that driving my Volvord is a lot more fun than driving a Grand Cherokee, But that is my opinion
It all boils down to HP uses gas, the more HP the more gas. We all have to make sacrificies, mine is a hall-ass grocery getter that gets real bad city gas mileage.

Re: GADZOOKS!!! (Volvord 784VC)

No, I'm just asking because my neighbor is into Cobra replicas (i.e. knows his way around those motors) and I have this perfectly good 245 in my driveway.... I do the math, but my wife keeps looking at me sternly and talking about fuel economy.
As for the Grand Cherokee. It was a '95 Ltd with Up Country (about an inch lift). It wasn't a great driver on the road (wasn't bad, but wasn't great), but it was pretty kick butt off road. I miss it, but at that time in my life (it was brand new) I just couldn't afford to keep it.

Hey, I understand (I keep the gas milage secret from my wife)
Remember that I am using a carb, which inherantly uses more gas in city, stop and go, conditions. Using EFI would make a considerable difference, but I am old school (to be more specific I am just old) and I really like the simplicity, response, and sound of a well tuned 4 barrel carb.

Re: GADZOOKS!!! (Volvord 784VC)

My neighbor and I were having the EFI vs. Carb debate yesterday. For a Cobra, I'm into the Carbs, but for my wife to somehow okay the conversion, I'd need to push efficiency and reliability.
