well guys - i just got my 06 S40 T5. I like it, but even before I get rid of the paper plates I can say definitively that in a year or two (MAX 2.5), maybe less ill be quite bored of it.
Im used to something with a bit more power (I can outrun it in a lifted 4wd 1 ton truck?!) and a bit more customizable (the SD in my sig, as well as some other vehicles ive had): these are things that the S40 will never be no matter how much money I was to pour into it. A G35 or an S4(maybe spring for the RS 4?) were my other options when getting the S40, but I decided it might be nice to have something ‘practical’ (its hard to park a truck on 38s in a parking garage lol) for a little while and with 4 doors/an arguably usable back seat (as long as you don’t sit behind me – gotta have it all the way back)/ +10 more MPG hwy than the G the s40 fits that criteria quite well while still being somewhat sporty and a fun drive.
That being said, iv/e been reading a lot in the s40 forum since getting the car and a little here as well – seems the 40s have a few quirks as do the Rs (but they are a far nicer car than the 40s overall)…. Not quite sure what happened to the excellent Volvo quality of old, but I suppose its still good enough for a moderately priced car.
After this vehicle I think ill be quite through with my ‘practical’ streak for the time being, and while im sure there will be some new choices that come out in that time – if I can hold out for that long - these are my current ones. Thoughts? Which? Why? Etc etc…..

thanks
CH

logic isnt my strong point when it comes to vehicles but it doesnt need to be - this is the first 'practical' one ive had... and ive had quite a few.
As for the test drive suggestion - its quite valid, however ive driven all of them but the RS4 and in fact i like all of them. I never claimed an s40 had the same target market as an RS4; I could likely get 2 S40s for the price of one RS4 (especially with X-plan pricing on the Volvos), but thats not what im concerned with at the moment. The G is at least 10k more than the s40, but it was still my other option at the time of purchase (a whopping week or two ago). Im looking at the - fairly reliable (ive had BMWs before.thats why one is not on the list) QUITE fun to drive, with an acceptable aftermarket - type factor.
As I said, im new to the 'practical' thing and thus far im not sure how well it sits with me. With the exception of my other Volvo(a gift, tho ill admit ive grown to like it) everything ive ever driven has had at least 8+" of lift or +400 rwhp.....or both.
thats why im looking for a little input, up till now ive known EXACTLY what ive wanted....but now im at a loss

G35 or S60R... both great choices
If you want easy HP addition, go with Volvo (IPD softloader coming out soon supposedly).
If you want more back seat space, and less quirks, go with G35. I think the Infiniti is less expensive as well.
They are both fast, and you don't need AWD in Texas, so really comes down to:
looks
driving feel
intangibles like legendary Volvo safety (but all cars are safe nowadays)
how often you want to see another person with your car
you know, if you can afford an RS4, did you look at the M45? That is an amazing car from reading reviews.

"R", thanks for the input! I appreciate someone not thinking im totally insane right off the bat…tho I might be
As for back seat space, I should have said id likely be going with the G35 coupe (seems to be a pain to find one with nav tho unless you special order it). But if i WERE to get the G sedan i would go for the AWD version (should say here - i have not driven the sedan or the AWD sedan, just the coupe) which just makes it all the closer.
I think the infinity stickers at ~42 v the Volvos ~45?
The infinity M is a nice car – got a friend whose parents have one (don’t remember if it’s the 35 or 45) and it does some cool stuff! Just not quite what im looking for, it seems a little big-ish when driving since its comparable in size to a 5 or 7 series BMW. But if i had kids it would be an option for sure!
and uh.... unless im looking at something wrong on the merc website.... for those suggesting the AMG, im not spending 125K....unless yall want to throw in the extra ~50-60k

Re: (CH)

By 2007-08 BMW will be offering the 3-Series 335i coupe and possible an M version. Even today's 3-Series sedan drives better than all the cars you mentioned. Before I bought my R I test drove about 10 cars, some of them more than once, (TL, G35, A4, A6, S60, S80, IS350, GS300, C350, 330i). Hands down the 3-series drove the best. The reasons of why I bought the R are that is less expensive and I wanted the 4-C suspension.

Re: G35, S4 or S60R (CH)

Have you tried the M45??? Too much of a guzzler??? Not sporty enough???
If not, I think based on your other options a BMW should be on the list too... IMO the new 335 (and certainly M3) are going to be the best cars out there period...
But you have to be willing to wear the BMW badge, and some people just can't (me).

It was somewhat sporty i guess, but not what I was looking for – as for gas consumption…Not really sure only had it for about an hour and I wasnt in the car the entire time.
If youre interested in one I can ask what they think of it since they drive it every day and I dont?
Re: (LTA)

A block west from my home the ultra rich enclave of La Jolla starts. I visit there quite frequently on the R and on my bike. There are only two dealerships: Lamborghini/Bentley and a Ferrari/Maserati. On Saturdays and Sundays it is easy to spot Ferraris and Murcielagos. Just last week I was keeping up with an Aston Martin DB9. I haven't seen an R yet. I do see S60s quite often.
I know what they're like... I agree, I didn't realize you were 23... Definitely something more aggressive is required ...
If you don't mind the brand, BMW is the way to go.... Take a look...

Buy an Elise sport cup and forget all the above mentioned, its a go-kart on rails. Besides if you're 23 what do you need a backseat for anyways?
When I have the opportunity my next purchase will be an exige hands down.
But the S40 is a great car too. Enjoy your purchase and have fun with it. If you don't want to keep it long I would carefully consider the mods that you add on, certain changes will impact your resale.

Re: G35, S4 or S60R (CH)

CH,
All the cars you mentioned are nice cars and all the ones in the poll as well! The V8 S4 is less customizable than the R... The S4 also has equal amount of quirks to the R. The G35 is nice but most people have somewhat of a preference for japanese cars/euro cars/ american cars etc. the 2007 G35 sedan looks fantastic astetically and add 300+hp, 4 doors, AWD and a 6MT makes it a strong car amd add Japanese reliability.... and a HUGE aftermarket with havinbg the engine from a 350Z. I am thinking this will be my next project Either this or a 2002 IS300 and put a 2JZ motor from a supra in it since that is the same motor they come with just a weaker block and internals it will be a direct bolt on.
If you want to go European and get cusomization get the new 2.0T although you are pretty much limited to 400hp or the 2002 S4 wich is kinda like the european supra in regards to how it responds to mods. If you are looking for a "toy" then the R is a great option and there are recipes for 500hp available if you look but still you are gambling with quirks. The only problem my R has had have been a couples sensors went out and my dealer was great about taking care of those. Oh, and a bad strut in the beginning that was challenges due to "the extra vibration from a cat-back" but after some reasoning was taken care of without any additional headache. I feel lucky to have had so few issues but I pamper the hell out of my R too.
