fuel pump extra loud 'n' noisy

1987 244 5-spd man, same as my last post..

the main fuel pump gets rather noisy at times and seems at those times, there's no power, seemingly like it's getting a no-pressure situation... the in-tank pump is "fine" (has power, the rubber line is good)

ideas?

Test the fuel pressure at the regulator near the fuel rail.
Replace the complaining fuel pump.
Replace all fuel filters and while there replace the in-tank fuel pump.

You guys probably won't believe this, but I had THREE in-tank pumps replaced within about six months. I absolutely couldn't drive my Turbo Volvo when the temps got over about 90 degrees. We looked at absolutely everything. The solution, would you believe (?) was the fuel pump relay under the dash. It seems that the contacts were "on the verge" of going bad, but not quite. I replaced the relay, and all this Summer, with temps that reached 120 degrees, I had absolutely no problem.
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know what everybody says about the in-tank pump, but when the relay is just on the verge of going bad, it does create problems that even the best Volvo mechanic can't diagnose. I was told to replace the fuel distributor, replace the injectors, replace the electrical system... WHAT??? On a car with less than 140K?
The relay on a Turbo is a cheap fix.

as some of you are aware-- actually, I'm sure none of you know) I flip Volvos off of the craigslist - buy em when ppl think they're dead, replace 2 hoses and clean the interior back to the day when Sven wiped it clean.. i've done maybe 12 in the last year & 1/2 and at least 4 of those had the in-tank pump mid-line hose gone bad- $4part and $1200 profit. i have upwards of 20 fuel pump relays from wrecks (never leave the yard without at least 2 sets of relays, injectors and black trim parts!!)

the in-tank pump is the 1st place i look for each and every fuel jobn i come across. it's the most abused part with the least least amt of work done on the car! fix it, 150k more miles added to the Volvo!
