My wife has our xc90 in for the 30k service right now. The service technician says we need new brake pads, and it will be a charge ($188). We're still within the free scheduled maintenance window of 36k miles, but the technician is trying to feed us a line about brake pads being "normal wear items, so they are excluded from free scheduled maintenance".
My understanding when we bought the xc90 was that the FSM was similar to FSM packages from other companies (BMW for example) in that anything and everything other than gas and tires was provided gratis during the FSM period. Is this wrong??
Thanks,
Jim
Nope, that's correct. FSM doesn't include brakes. It was explained as such to us by our sales rep in February `03 when we decided to buy.

Re: FSM does not include brakes??! (AccuView)

The normal factory scheduled maintenance is free for the following mileage intervals:
7.5k, 15k, 22.5k, and 30k. The specifics are in the the link below. Notice, they will CHECK the brake pads, not replace them.
My guess is Yannis was offering a perk to OSD customers for a limited time and exclusively thru his dealer.
Now, if your pads or wiper blades need replacing, and you're under 12k miles, that should fall under the adjustment period that covers certain wear and tear items. Here's a quote from the warranty book of my 05 XC90:
"Wear and Tear Items
As part of your vehicle's normal service and maintenance requirements, certain parts may need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Since these parts are consumed at varying rates, replacement is based on the operation and condition of your vehicle and on fixed schedules under normal operation and use of your vehicle. These items include, but may not be limited to, the following list: filters, fuses, belts, brake pads, brake rotors, remote keyless entry system batteries, wiper blades, clutch lining, shock absorbers, floor mats, upholstery/rugs, etc.
Replacement of these items are the owner's responsibility, with the exception of those items covered during the Adjustments Coverage Period (refer to page 11) or where specific manufacturing defects may be demonstrated.

Page 11

Adjustments Coverage
Adjustments which are refinements to the original factory fittings and alignments, and which are required as part of the break-in period, will be made during the Adjustments Coverage Period. Exceptions are items covered under normal maintenance services, including Pre-Delivery or items excluded in the New Vehicle section. The duration of the adjustment coverage is twelve (12) months or 12,000 miles/20,000 kilometers, whichever occurs first.
The term "Adjustments" as used in this warranty refers to minor repairs not usually associated with the replacement of parts or normal maintenance service items. Parts which are covered for replacement because of wear during the Adjustments Period only are: wiper blades, remote keyless entry system batteries, brake pads, brake rotors, shock absorbers and clutch lining. These items may also be covered under the Basic Warranty Period if manufacturing defects cause the failure. Examples of labor only repairs which are covered during the Adjustments Period are wheel balancing, window regulator adjustment and hood adjustment. "
Our XC90 is in for service now, it went for the 15k service and some other little things. I'm fully expecting the paperwork to say I need new front pads soon.
Tim

Also, in my experience with other brands, different dealers have different levels of "goodwill" budget which they can use to cover some of the items falling in the gray areas of warranty. That probably explains why some dealers are able to cover certain items which the other dealers deny.

30K is pretty good, some get less... Many get more, just depends on how you drive.
It also depends on the thinkness that the dealer says they are needed. I watch my own and replace them when the pad is very thin. This gets me many more miles on all my vehicles. Dealer specs are very conservitive on service, it gets them $$$ to the service department. Service dept is where the real money is in car sales.
I had over 140k on a Chevy Astro van and still had the orignal rear brake shoes, fronts were replaced once when the rotors warped (cheap orignals), MOOG replacement set was on when I sold it. I usually get many miles from brakes. Lets see how far the XC90 can go. When I need pads, if the rotors are not warped, I just will replace the pads. Rotors will only get replaed if they are severe, I usually file the ridge off the edge of the rotor when replacing the pads.
