I have a 2007 S40 AWD, just hit 55k miles. Whenever I hit a bump, the front suspension squeaks, sorta like a metal to metal chirp. It doesn't do it when I go out and push on the nose of the car, has to be a quick jolt.
I've had this problem for a while, but it goes away in the winter (I opened the windows just to make sure). It's back in force now, and I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem, or knows what it is so I can fix it. The dealer didn't do anything the three times I brought it in under warranty. Now that it's out of warranty, there's no way I'm going to that dealer again.

squeak could be coming from the upper strut bearing. Does it tend to do it more often at low speeds and while turning?

I complained about this when I was under warranty. It was a chirp when the front hit bumps. They replaced all sorts of stuff up front including bump stops and struts. (Free alignments )
I solved the problem myself by accident. I installed new brake pads and greased the backs of the pads. Voila. I hope yours is just as easy to fix.
Edit to clarify: the sound happened when I hit sharp bumps like a manhole cover at 30mph or a pothole, not slow going over speed bumps.

Re: Front suspension squeaks (davetul)

I have an 05 S40 AWD, a hair over 59k miles, and am starting to experience that too. Very interested in any fixes, since I've also taken it to the dealer recently for what I thought could have been a wheel bearing (sounded like rotational squealing from front passenger wheel at < 30mph) and a new ignition (100% covered under CPO). They found nothing wrong with the suspension
I actually pushed on the strut tower, getting no noise from the suspension. That's what led me to believe it could be the bearings. Back to the drawing board, unless by some miracle Volvo finds it when I do my 60k checkup tomorrow.
I hope it's just one issue, and not two coincidental issues.

Re: Front suspension squeaks (Bigblk4)

No, it doesn't matter if I'm turning or going straight. It happens at low speeds, and sometimes at high speeds (could do it always at high speeds, but I can't hear with the wind). No matter if I'm turning or going straight. Has to be a sharp bump, not a small hill. Potholes will make it happen, as will speed bumps (if I hit them fast enough to get a jolt), but it won't happen when I slam on my brakes.
I haven't thought of the brake pads making the noise, there's a road nearby that's pretty bumpy, I'll run down it and hit the brakes enough to engage them and let you know if it's still there. If not, I'll be doing some brake work this weekend!

I don't know if it went away if I was on the brakes (never tested that). It was also the fronts only. I found this out by replacing my pads and the chirp went away. I didn't grease the backs when I installed them, and about a month later the chirp came back. I pulled them out and greased the backs and the chirp went away for a year (it just came back).
FYI, two Volvo service depts and the regional service rep (a guy they don't mention exists unless you bring it up first) were stumped on this issue.

Re: (mattdoc)

I went out to a bumpy road this afternoon, and alternated braking and accelerating, and the noise went away when I had the brakes on. I'm going to pull the pads tomorrow and get some lubricant in there, from what it seems, that'll fix a very annoying problem.
Thanks a lot for all the comments, I appreciate it. I hate random noises...main reason I have a Volvo..
