One of my spoilers just got ripped off driving in the heavy rain today. I drove through areas where the water level was pretty high and never noticed when I lost it, but now I have only one and it's falling off as well.
How do I remove it without damaging the bumper and, ideally, the spoiler?
I also would need to remove the last piece remaining of the one that got eaten by the waters: a large piece of plastic tied to the bumper by some sort of screw.
Thanks.
Oh, I went back the way I came home and found the spoiler floating.

By the way, for those of you who've followed, this is it. I've had one thing after another happen with the Volvo and, whether luck-related or not, I never liked the car too much to start with, so as soon as have all these things worked out, the Volvo is going once and for all.

Just curious, what's going to replace it?

A4 2.0T quattro S-Line 6-speed, fully loaded (Bluetooth, NAV+, etc.) and chipped, most probably.
Now, what do I do about my spoiler? I don't want to drive to work tomorrow with that plastic piece hanging and, preferrably, with both spoilers off.

A sawzall or a swift kick with your shoe should do the trick.
-Eric

Irornically enough, they are not really built to come off easily, even though they do. Personally, if you are going to get rid of it, I'd leave the other half on so then you are only looking at about $400 parts and labor to repair it.
I've had many issues with these. If you just try an yank it off, you could damage the underside of the front bumper cover enough to where you would have to replace that too.
You don't want to end up spending $1,000+ just to get rid of it.
My $0.02. You can try the insurance route, but I'm not sure that hitting standing water would be considered act of god.
-Ben

Fault shouldn't be at issue (assuming he's not riding around without comprehensive or collision coverage). He just needs to consider whether its worth making the call to his insurer based upon the cost of repair, his deductible and the potential impact on insurance rate. If it's a $500 repair and he has a $500 deductible...seems kind of silly.
-Eric

You need to get underneath and drill out the rivets. Then you need to spend hours getting the adhesive off with your fingernails. A hairdryer will soften it up a bit, but be careful not to get the paint too hot or it will lift.

Re: Front spoiler got ripped off -- How do I remove the other one? (LotusMark)

Guys, forget about insurance, cost and saving the spoilers. Last week, I had my car in for scheduled maintenance and when it came out of the shop, it looked like this:

(Another one of those problems I've had in a row, so I might as well have an unreliable Audi I like much more. Chances are I will have it with me more than I've had my Volvo.)
The dealer promised to order new spoilers, paint them and call me when they were ready to install them, so I'm waiting for them. I actually taped the inner corner of the spoilers to the bumper just in case, but, obviously, this wasn't enough.
All I want to do is remove the second spoiler and the piece of the first that's still stuck to the bumper and not damage the bumper. Screw the spoilers.
Sue Esponte, you're not serious about the kick, are you?
LotusMark, what do you mean by drill out the rivets and how underneath are we talking about?

Re: Front spoiler got ripped off -- How do I remove the other one? (Razor1973)

I had your exact car. Really. An '05, silver/gobi, premium, sport kit, all the goodies.
I positively hated the sport kit and that wretched front spoiler. Waaaay to far ahead of the wheelbase to be practical. Constantly scraping at the slightest incline. I had a bag of spare rivets on hand to constantly replace the loosened and broken ones. I would not take it out some days if I knew there would be "risks" along the route. And I couldn't see let alone get under the car to do the things I like, like changing the oil. It was an ordeal to even ramp it up.
I eventually had the body shop urethane the "wings" to the front end. They never loosened after that, even when the car was demolished last month.
I will say this, driving without the sport kit and those stinking front spoiler wings is a much more relaxed experience.

Believe me.....I feel your pain.

Re: Front spoiler got ripped off -- How do I remove the other one? (sgmlaw)

sgmlaw, indeed the same car! Funky color combination. Although I bet you had the heated seats. I don't. I don't need them in South Florida.
My feelings on the body kit are mixed, although they're leaning more towards the sour side. I think it looks really nice and gives the "R" an edge, but you have to be soooooo careful with those wings all day long and it gets frustrating when you find places you just can't get into/through with this car.
So what do you drive now? Or is not not another Volvo? Why was your S60R demolished?
Can you give me more details on that urethane job? Maybe I could talk to a local shop who could do that for me.
By the way, I assume your solution only made the wings stay on, but didn't solve your risky drive problem.
I also wonder what the car would look like with the entire body kit except the front spoilers. Or whether it would be easy to remove the entire kit, although I shouldn't be considering that being that I am leasing and would have to put it back on before returning the car.

You need to jack up the car enough to be able to see underneath and enough room to use a drill.

Re: Front spoiler got ripped off -- How do I remove the other one? (Razor1973)

My '05 was good looking in my opinion. A very open, airy look to it. And the silver was close enough to the pegs to give it a cool monochrome look. I like the '05 silver better than the '06 electric silver - the '05 is whiter and brighter, almost mirror-like when well waxed.
My '05 was totaled in an accident last month. I replaced it with an '06 S60R, in black/atacama, and NO sport kit. It's a MUCH more fun to drive car, as I no longer constantly think about what upcoming road irregularity the front end might not clear.
The urethane adhesive keeps the wings on, but doesn't keep them from scraping. The major drawback to the urethane is that the wings will never loosen, regardless of impact force. If you hit them hard enough, it will damage the whole bumper cover instead of breaking off.
