I just ordered stock pads from ipd and the instructions included say not to install shims on VINS S60 466813 and up with vibration dampers.
1 - How do I know if my car has 'vibration dampers' installed?
2- What does the VIN refer to? My VIN is like 20 alpha-num digits long - what part corresponds to the 466813?
I've seen this page:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=87164 which doesn't make any mention of shims - its a great page and will be my guide!
Re: Front Pad replacements on S60R - do I install shims (paul_da_programmer)

I may be completely wrong here, but I'm guessing it means cars made in late 2005 that have the upgraded brake backing that prevents the brake squealing. The six-digit number you listed is probably the last 6, Volvo often breaks up different parts based on the last 6 of the VIN so I don't think this would be any different. Do a search for new model 2005 brakes and see if that turns up anything.
Does it say greater than or less than 466813? Check that and see if your VIN is in the proper bracket to determine if it will work in your car. Of course it might work anyway, I've never researched brake shims so hopefully someone else here knows more
Doh, I just noticed you said 466813 and up. And here's an older thread with some info that may be relevant.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=35164

shoot John at BVV an email. he helped me when it came time to do my 2004. However, if you have the brake damping kit installed (it's a flattish aluminum bar extending across the caliper bolts, you don't need the shims.

Thanks - that is a good link:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...age=2
It shows the vibration damper installed (the TNN calls it the 'mass damper') I guess I can just look when I get a chance. So it appears that if I don't have the vibration damper installed I should install the shims.

When you have the wheel off, it will be immediately apparent if you have the mass dampers or not. If you do, chuck the shims. I've never installed them and my brakes don't squeal. But I use CRC Brake Disc quiet AND the Volvo Gold lube as well.

CRC can be found anywhere...Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. I used the gold lube that came with the pads and have no noise, unless I haven't washed the car in a while and there may be some brake dust buildup causing some contamination somewhere.

email John, seriously. he can direct you to where to find that number and whether or not you should use the shims. He's a great guy and a fantastic resource.
