On the new s40's I see in my area, I have noticed that the top of the front liscense plate mount covers the lower chrome edge of the grill.
I've seen this with two dealers for sure. Yet, if it were moved just an inch or so lower, then the grill would not be obstructed and the less important from an asthetic perspectic lower grill would be slightly obscured. Any thoughts on this. I'm picking up my car in Sept.

Re: Front Liscense Plate Mount (Charles847)

I believe there are indentations on the front bumper marking where the dealer is to drill the holes for the plate bracket. I would be surprised if they were now positioned such that the grille trim was blocked by a conventional frame -- I know my front plate does not quite reach the bottom trim on my front grille. Is it possible that the examples you saw just had especially wide frames on the plates?
In any case, you can always request that the dealer not drill the holes before giving the car to you. Although you'll want to check the law in Illinois regarding whether a front plate is required.

Re: Front Liscense Plate Mount (mullmann)

Thanks for the input.
The plate frames on both that I saw had dealer name across the top, perhaps that is why they protruded.
I'm picking up my car in Sweden and understand it will have European plates there and I don't know if the holes for the plate mounts will be in the same place, since the Sweidsh plates are narrower.

Mine came that way but you can lower it an inch by removing the plate holder and using the holes higher up on the holder. This will lower the plate so the bottom of the grill is visible, along with about a half inch of the bumper. They higher hole are slightly narrower but the screws work just fine.

It's common for the dealer to install plates that cover the lower part of the grill. Some members here went as far as re-drilling the holes.

Charles,
I picked up my S40 in Sweden last year and the holes are predrilled. Your temporary Swedish plates are held in by little bolts the same place your Illinois plates will go (and yes, it will cover the lower chrome ridge of the grill--it must be a standard Volvo piece).

solution: lose the front license plate all together. I've been pulled over 3 times for speeding and not once has anyone said anything about my front plate, which is required here in Texas

What about the holes that were drilled into your bumper? I took off my license plate and the holes looked so bad and seemed like they'd be so hard to fix that i said screw it and i put the plate back on.

just pull off the little plastic shavings and you can barely even see the holes. my car is black maybe thats why they are hard to see.
