I thought I would fill you all in on a repair I just did. It took awhile to figure it out, so perhaps my misunderstanding will save someone some time.
For a few months we have had a loud clanging sound coming from outside the car. It would come and go, not dependent on any particular circumstance. It was also related to speed. So, I assumed it was a wheel based issue or a driveshaft based issue.
I took it to my shop (at the time it wasnt making any noise). They Spent about an hour checking it out and found nothing wrong. So, we drove it for about another 3 weeks and the clanging would come and go as always. Finally, one day I was driving by the mechanics and it happened to be clanging away. He jumped in the car, we drove around, and finally he got to hear it as well. They keep it for the rest of the day and finally decided the front CV joint was shot.
They replaced the CV joint and the problem is fixed. Only $375 for parts and labor - thought that was a decent deal.
So, if you hear a clanging noise from the front of your car relating to speed - check out the CV joint.
Eric
