I was rotating the wife's tires the other day, and I noticed her front pads are nearly shot. She drives hard, but this is pretty accelerated wear!
I will swap out the pads myself, and I was thinking of going aftermarket for some better pad life. Of course, I may be giving up some braking capability with the "soft" OEM pads which seem to be very "rotor friendly."
Part of me says stick with the OEM pads and just plan on new pads every 12K, the other side of me says go aftermarket with a harder compound with less brake dust and longer life.
What are you all doing?

Re: Front Brakes after just 12,000 miles? What pads do you all use? (Emission)

I bought Akebono ceramic pads all around for our recent replacement. Volvo put them on when we recently had our XC90 in for service at 53k. This is the third set of pads. The first ones went around 24k while the second ones (OEM installed by Volvo) lasted about 28k.
The Volvo service advisor informed me that I could get Volvo ceramics if I chose, and they were but a few dollars more than the Akebono pads. As I had already bought the Akebono's I had them installed instead.
So far, no squeaks at all and the best part is no dust.

Hmmmm.... I was thinking about "PBR Ultimates" - a ceramic/Kevlar blend that holds up to high heat (for a heavy SUV) and gives great wear. I can get them for $76.95 plus shipping.

I'd gather those would work just as well. The number of quality low heat generating pads on the market are such that anyone of them would suffice.

After doing all the research, I went with OEM pads.
Kinda boring, I know, but they are easy on the rotors, don't make noise, and they stop very well. A friend who owns a shop got them for me for only $51 (cost), so I couldn't pass up the deal.

Much better then stock, but not track-only either, so they won't chew up rotors as fast.
I'm supposedly at 35% w/ my stock pads and will def. go w/ the Ultimates when the time comes. I'll gladly take the extra dust and faster rotor wear in exchange for better braking.
On the track, I run Ultimates on my Porsche (cross-drilled Brembos). Never had any issues or fade even when running really, really hard! I swear by them, but no need for them on the Volvo (for me, at least).

All done. Piece of cake - maybe 10 minutes per side. Old pads were pretty shot for <12,000 miles!

Compared to new pad:

I don't like to go below the thickness of the backing plate.
My Passat ('02 1.8T) used to eat rear pads for some reason.

Re: Front Brakes after just 12,000 miles? What pads do you all use? (Emission)

Just goes to show that relying solely on computers doesn't pay off. My front brakes supposedly have the wear sensors, hence why I neglected to keep on top of the wear early on. Upon replacing the pads once hearing metal-to-metal contact, I saw that both sensors/connectors were sheared off, with only dangling wires left behind.
I'm amazed at how much is actually monitored on our XC90's. Had an issue recently where the lock/unlock switch would sometimes do nothing. Had it looked at during the 15K checkup and they said there was a fault code for the right rear passenger door lock/ajar switch flaking out intermittently, thereby fooling the system into thinking one of the doors was still open.
