Hey guys, i just bought a 99 s70 GLT for my wife and im confused about a few things:
What is the Compressor Boost Valve?(wastegate actuator?)
What is the Turbo Control Valve?
What ever happened to letting the wastegate do its job?

I know what they are, just not what they do. If this is the ECUs way of mointoring boost, does this mean that the only way to up the boost is through the computer?
Ive done a fair amount of research, but im still confused. Ive dealt with turbo cars my whole life, but theyve always been Japanese. In fact, all my cars are Japanese...
Thanks in advance!

Here let me help you out!

Quote, originally posted by Hondamanlxi »

What is the Compressor Boost Valve?(wastegate actuator?)

It is actually a Compressor Bypass Valve and it functions as a recirculating type blow off valve. Only it is mounted on the turbo and the air makes a very short path back around to the other side of the compressor to alleviate pressure during shifts and so on

Quote, originally posted by Hondamanlxi »

What is the Turbo Control Valve?

The turbo control valve in essence is a ECU controlled boost controller. The stock waste gate on these cars are set any where from 2 - 8 PSI usually if it is over 4 or so it has been tweaked or adjusted by the previous owner. So if your car stock is supposed to boost 12 psi the wastegate alone may only get you 4 or 5. This is where the TCV comes in to help you get the other 7 or 8 PSI

Quote, originally posted by Hondamanlxi »

What ever happened to letting the wastegate do its job?

The wastegate still does it's job it just relies on input from the TCV to maintain boost and the TCV takes and sends readings to the ECU to make it all work (Simple version)

Quote, originally posted by Hondamanlxi »

I know what they are, just not what they do. Wow! Thanks for the hospitality! Most forums are full of noob-destroyers!
One last question on this topic: What boost level will the TCV/ECU allow?
I have a feeling you're going to say that its environmental.

Now that i know the limit, i can push it!(or at least make sure im getting all 8psi)
I wouldn't have such an issue with a reflash if it wasn't a thousand bucks!
I'm an English major, so usually i'm the first to catch it!

Re: (Hondamanlxi)

One more thing: the ECU is more concerned with the mass-air reading than the actual boost level, right?
So, in theory, i could lie to the ECU up to the point where the volume pisses it off.
Right, wrong, retarded?

Re: (Hondamanlxi)

Modifying the wastegate will NOT get you more hp.
What it WILL do is get all the hp the ECU will give plus the boost comes on much quicker and you WILL feel it.
You may not be getting all your 8 lbs right now

Re: (Hondamanlxi)

Since you say you are used to driving Hondas I will tell you that boosting 8 pounds on say a B16 / B18 will give you a completely different feel (faster) IMO than boosting 8 pounds on your S70.
A boost gauge in the cabin would be a great place to start as well as checking out the wastegate settings.

Re: (kmg_S60R)

A boost gauge is definitely in its future.
Things done:
-Wastegate arm shortened (about four turns, no CEL)
-K&N drop in
Questions:
-I know there are no gains by running a BOV, but are there any adverse effects? I cant imagine that allowing metered air out is a good thing but no one addresses it.
-Why are tunes so damn expensive?

Re: (Hondamanlxi)

I don't care if you don't have a CEL, that TOO MUCH for a 99 that's not chipped, turn it back 1 to 2 turns, it will probably run better. The only reason you're not is somehow the wastegate must have been set way under spec, still
It's getting too much boost too soon.
I did 2 turns on my 2000R and it got so much early boost, it stunbled in 1st gear. Turned it back a turn and it is PERFECT
Tunes are expansive because there are so few Volvos. They have to make up the R&D somewhere.
When you're dealing in hundreds not thousands of customers, that's just the way it is.
The cost had to be spread out among much fewer customers

Re: (Hondamanlxi)

Run the Eurosport tuning Intake and you will not ever think about needing a BOV again. You will have that woooosshhhh sound and I think will perform better than a K&N. @ 189.00 and easy to install it is a deal. I did the exact version intake for my 2000 S40 and the release of pressure was awesome compared to any BOV I had heard, but not obnoxious. I think it will satisfy. I agree with JRL that if you cranked it down 4 turns you may have adjusted too high. There is a specification in the form of a PSI rating that the wastegate should be set at and there is a window of proper adjustment. Though the turn and test method is something that has been adopted by many as a fairly safe practice and usually very successful.

This boy doesn't care about proper feedback, he just does what he wants to, even after HUNDREDS here have adjusted their wastegates properly.

Re: (JRL)

The factory spec is between 1.5 - 3.0 PSI for the wastegate. I have mine set at 4 on my '98 and it's perfect. Read that Wothrline article regarding tuning the 850/70 series cars and tuning in general. That man knows what he's talking about, trust me.
Enjoy your car and of course do what you want with it but at least consider the advice given...many of us have gone through plenty of trial and error so that others can go through less.

Re: (Big Will)

Thats cute, JRL.

So come to find out, the wastegate(or at least the turbo) had been messed with a time or ten. It didnt dawn on me until this AM that one of the heat shield spring-bolts was missing.
As far as the trail and error goes, im a religious 93+ octane runner and a plug-color checker. Lean is never mean. ever. White only looks good on a car.
About the tune cost: That makes perfect sense. If it were a honda, it would cost $2 because of the 2134512355 of them.
After all this research, ive decided to sell my Maxima. I have my sights set on an 850r (auto, but 2/3 isnt bad) about an hour away.

/end dumb question thread.
