Autoblog posted a news piece today on Jaguar, and Ford saying it's 'Not for sale'. During a speach to the Center for Automotive Research, ex PAG boss and now head of Ford of the Americas, Mark Fields said that Jag isn't for sale, though maybe they'd focus it more as a "niche brand".
What does that mean? Well, I'd guess it spells doom for the X-type, which seems just about fine to most people in the industry. I think an S-type replacement is in the works, and there's always the bigger cars and (man I'd love to see this), maybe they'll do more special build cars like the Ford GT was, though badged as Jaguars. Modern day XKSS anyone????
What does this mean for Volvo? Well, to me it means Volvo needs to be Ford's serious contender to the very lucrative executive market where Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infiniti all play. In BMW speak, that's 1-2-3- and 5-series at least. That should also be with performance in mind.
This is an enthusiast site, so it's not surprising I'm mentioning performance, but it's important to note. With the R models ready to go on hiatus, it's important that Volvo consider a return, and expansion. Within the Ford Motor Company, there is no answer to BMW's M division, Audi's S and RS models, or MB's AMG stuff. If folks are drawn to that product, they need to go elsewhere.
Volvo's got a good basis, and a decent history for performance. They're credible, they just need to get serious and devote some time, effort and money to the cause. The 30/40/50/60/70 and yes, even 80 and 90 series cars should have R packages with 4C and high-powered engines. And, they should get tech happier than they already are.
Sure, emphasize safety, but don't hide behind it. I remember Vic Doolan saying you could emphasize safety with performance. "In a Volvo, you can feel safe enough to have fun". It's an interesting spin. It ought to be more seriously adopted. There's a big gaping hole of european performance in the FoMoCo portfolio, even before Jag goes niche. People buying M3s and S4s probably aren't considering Mustangs or even a gussied up MKS. Volvo is perfect to fill that void.
More here...
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/0...maybe/

I always thought the X-type was to Jaguar what the Cimarron was to Cadillac. The latter showed that a good marque doesn't need a "low cost" entry vehicle...

But think more like it should be the X-Type is to Jag like the CATERA was to Caddy! The Cimarron was just a plain BAD dream!

Hey, I LIKE the X-Type. It 's the only Jag I could ever afford. I'm taking a wild guess I'm alone on this.

I liked the X-Type as well as the Caterra. I saw a few X's at the local HS (a Prep really) and know for a fact that they were not moms and or dads car but JR's. So yes they did have a following and sold. One for sure was a stable mate to a XKR Conv and a XJR. I know the family.
