GM files for bankruptcy today - Chrysler has successfully merged with Fiat.
AND Ford just announces it will increase 3rd quater production.
This great news.
Now how will this impact on Volvo? In a declining sales market, Ford has picked up market share thanks to the bailout of GM & Chrysler (and the stigma attached). Even if/when these companies emerge from BK, that stigma will remain IMO (especially DOA Chrysler). If Ford can continue this trend and return to profitability on its own, definitely is a good thing. That said, I don't see Volvo gaining anything from this. YMMV.

Showing sales success by Ford along with no bailout funding would surely help in securing loans for Volvo and it's survival.
Volvo may receive lifeline from Belgian government - [Ford Volvo ...If approved, the Belgian loans will only be applicable for Volvo's ... and the Flemish Premier Kris Peeters has been in talks with Volvo CEO ...
http://www.motorauthority.com/....html - 38k - Cached - Similar pages -
Excellent article.
Pedal to the metal - Full speed ahead.
The last thing Ford needs right now is to have Volvo fall into the same quagmire as GM and Chrysler. Permitting Volvo to declare chapter 11 will not look good on Ford. AND, selling Volvo along with it's intellectual property for a measly $2b will do more harm then good.
UNLESS.
Well Ford hasn't revealed the identity of the secret private equity consortium that are bidding on Volvo just yet.
Hmmm I wonder who it could be?

Re: Ford announces third quarter production increase. EEEHHHAAA (Johann)

You've got something there Johann as there is a shortage of trucks and SUVs in the Middle East/Asian/Pacific market. Ford could ramp up production of their new fuel efficient F150 for export sales.
Apparently, there is a new leveling of the playing field - legacy costs are gone - which contributed to a $3000.00 cost per vehicle. I'm assuming it's the same for Ford and Volvo.
Hummer that gas guzzler has been sold to a Chinese private equity firm. It's production will remain in the USA and shipped abroad. Ford could do the same and so could Volvo.

Re: Ford announces third quarter production increase. EEEHHHAAA (MagoonR)

Maybe we shouldn't get to excited about the Hummer sale. It seems that the Chinese government may block the Hummer sale as they do not want Chinese companies owning complete manufacturing assemblies abroad. But, would rather focus on European parts manufacturing within China.
Go figure eh.
Now this says a lot! If the Chinese government does go forward and actually blocks the Hummer sale it surely confirms the other threads in News and Rumors re: Chinese will not buy Volvo or SAAB for that matter. Chinese Gov't has always been about manufacturing cars in China.
That is why there are so many transplant factories there.
When Rover was sold to the Chinese, they packed up everything in Longbridge and brought it to China. Now, they make Roewe's there.
